I dont own a car. So these things worry me not.
If you live close to what you need, ride a bicycle, take transit.... you'll have way more money for the important things in life, like shoes and vodka.
I get it now. California government doesn't like huge gas hog vehicles and charges more for registration. Something I looked into when I was going to move to San Diego.

Honestly... and sorry dudes with big trucks..... but.. they don't charge enough.
I hate SUVs and trucks. If you work construction and need a truck you should get a permit... and can own a truck..... but to have a truck as a primary mode of transit.... is.. well.. overkill. They are needed way less than people think. So it makes me wonder why people don't just own a normal pickup and operate a smaller car for everyday driving. I bet it would save money to park a truck most of the year and own a car for daily driving. I mean look at the cost of a truck vs. car.
My main focus is on SUVs... ESPECIALLY when I see ONE person in this MASSIVE SUV. Why? what the fu** is the reason? they mess up the roads, take up more space, they hit smaller cars and then just leave (happened to me twice) and they almost NEVER are full.
I think it is funny when I am driving to work and I pass mostly cars in the carpool lane (two or more people per vehicle) and see an ocean of SUVs in the normal lanes....
I own a truck(4WD), I also have a car, but it's a "toy" and I also own a second fullsize truck(only 2 wheel drive). The biggest of the 3 is the primary driver.
Why you might ask? Because I like trucks, I live in the country, I might just decide to stop by a home depot/lowe's/menards and decide to buy things, I do that a lot. Why should I have to go home just to get the truck(if my primary driver was a car), then make a trip back? That's 20 min. one way, because of where I live. That sounds like a bigger waste of gas, and time, than just driving it in the first place. Also we have a winter here(meaning snow), requiring the use of a 4 wheel drive sometimes. The car couldn't quite haul the quad anywhere I wanted all the time. You're thoughts may be directed mainly at southern californians because that's where you live. Just thought I'd share my thoughts on it from a different location. Also, some people may not be able to afford more than one vehicle, and the uses that a truck provides over a car is what would push them to a truck. I used to have an SUV an 89 jeep cherokee with a rock ready lift kit, also a "toy" but it just wans't able to pull and haul as much stuff as the truck I bought to replace it. I still wish I hadn't sold it though, some days I would just like to be driving it around. Again why??? Sticking with my answer of "Just because I like trucks"
It is more expensive there than here though, I never registered my car there when I lived there, kept it registered in this state(it's not a california legal car, wasn't sold in that state), but I did have to carry insurance there, it was about twice what I payed here. So their regestration costs don't surprise me. I was paying $500/month for full coverage on a single car, that had a lot to do with my driving record though, I have a pretty heavy foot.....
Its only $665 for that giant?
Should be $1,200!
Edit: nice truck though.... im just not a Ford guy... BTW... why not get the extended bed since you already got the extended cab?
Edit: As for the black smoke diesels blow out, its soot and it settles on the ground. It's the crap that the gasolines put into the air that I'd be more concerned with.
