my little guy Luigi has been acting wierd the last few weeks not walking right and hanging at the bottom of the cage. So I brought him to the vet in town and he said he has a respitory infection and gave me meds for it. I have been giving them by mouth the last week or so but no better. he looks real week walking any help guys? how do I post a photo of Luigi. he has a 5.0 uvb bulb, heat lamp and night time lamp. temps are between 72-75 and I have a bottom heater for him too. I feed him meal worms which he has been eating , crickets he just looks at them. I dust them as good as I can, just learned about gutloading. Rob

mbd

a good light is about 125. If you have enough light it may be a calcium deficiency, which causes mbd metabolic bone loss. You may need to mash crickets and worms together with some dissolved calcium and vitamins and spoon feed him.

Before making suggestions, it's best to know husbandry.

Just copy-paste it into this thread, fill it out as detailed as possible. To post a photo, use the little dark-yellowish icon above the text box you type in that has mountains and a sun on it. I use websites like imageshack and tinypic.com to upload photos to post them to the site. They give you an image link from those sites, copy/paste it into the image code. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forums. Sorry to hear your little one isn't feeling well. First thing I would do is get rid of the night light. Chams need darkness at night for the best sleep. They can sense the light and will not thrive with lights at night. Also, you likely do not need the heater at the bottom of the enclosure. For the ideal setup you want warm temps at the top and gradually cooler towards the bottom. Here is a great caresheet for veileds.

Try to get some superworms instead of the meal worms. They are a bit better on the digestion. :)

What type of medication are you giving?

When my chameleon had a respritory infection my vet had me increase the temps (just a few degrees) - I don't have a veiled but I think your temps are low and you should have no light at night or heat on the bottom of your tank. (check the care sheet- you need to have a range of temps) At the top of the page is the resources section read the care sheets for veilded - forget what they told you at the pet store - https://www.chameleonforums.com/care/caresheets/veiled/

To digest food properly chameleons need a drop in temps at night so get rid of the night light and the bottom heater - they need a basking spot at the top and cooler at the bottom so they can regulate- the care sheet will give you the proper temps for your species with the infection I would aim for the high range of what is recomended (if they say 80-85 try and get yours to 84-85 not 80-81)

Your chameleon has Metabolic Bone Disease.

You need to be giving him NON vitamin D3 calcium every day with his food (on his food) and WITH vitamin D3 calcium twice a month with his food (again, ON the food).

He needs vet attention due to poor husbandry (many factors such as leaving lights on during the night, small caging, not giving supplements with food, can cause sickness in chameleons... due to stress or overcrowding or what have you).

You need to also get him calcium glubonate from the vet or just liquid calcium. Open his mouth GENTLY perhaps using a credit card, and give him two little drops through a syringe per day for around a month (PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS UNTIL A VET TELLS YOU).

Welcome to the forums. I am so sorry to see your little man so sick. You said his temps are 72-75? That's way to cold for a veiled. He should have a basking spot of at least 87 or 88. Here's a link to exactly how I keep my veileds and have had great success with this method. He doesn't look good. I would change everything ASAP and recommend you find a vet with allot of chameleon experience. What signs of an RI has he been showing? Any extra saliva in his mouth. Have you heard any popping sounds from his mouth? Has he been puffing out his chin or holding his head up? What is the name of the meds your vet gave him? It looks like he has MBD also. What supplements do you use? He will need liquid calcium for the MBD.

MBD can be stopped with the proper calciums and lighting. He will get better with proper treatment and care but his legs will always be curved. I'm attaching some info for you about MBD. You need calcium without d3 at every feeding, the calcium you have with d3 twice a month and a multi vitamin twice a month. Right now he also needs liquid calcium for the MBD. How old is your UVB light? I'll get you a link for chameleon vets also.
