Veiled Colors

I've read on here that chameleons change color due to emotional response, I'm guessing veiled do the same. What are some normal color patterns for veiled and what is the emotional response for them?

I've noticed my female veiled is usually a bright green while basking. Whenever I try to handle her, (to clean her cage and whatnot) she gets these dark green-blue spots and lines. I'm guessing this mean shes either scared/mad or some negative feeling.
Is this a correct?

Yes, that is correct. Veileds can chacge color when basking, excited, mad, threatened, etc.
Males and females are different colors so they vary. From what you explained sounds very normal.
Males can range from a pale green to bright green or blue body.
Normally they have 3 stripes on their body, and 12-14 stripes on the tail.
The srtipes are normally yellow with blue/turquoise spots.
Females are usually a pastel green to bright green. They turn very talk when they are gravid.
Brown spots that turn blue when gravid.

Here are some pictures of my Male Veiled

You said..."I've read on here that chameleons change color due to emotional response, I'm guessing veiled do the same. What are some normal color patterns for veiled and what is the emotional response for them?"...they change color not only due to emotional response but will also change to lighter colors when they are too warm and darker colors when they are trying to warm up.

The colors presented with the emotions are usually accompanied by posture too. Together they form a kind of communication.

A male veiled meeting another male veiled will inflate his body vertically, brighten his colors, inflate his gular pouch, hiss, gape, coil and uncoil his tail, hold one hand close to his chin, etc. All of this is intended to show the other chameleon that he is the best and defending his territory. If the other male doesn't leave quickly then things will escalate.

If a male veiled sees a receptive female veiled, he will brighten his colors, inflate his body vertically, bob his head and approach her to mount her.

If a receptive female veiled meets a male she will keep her body thin and likely hold it close to the branch, likely raise her back end slightly and move slowly away from the male while maintaining her green coloration with bright blue dots and mustard colored splotches.

A female can show the blue spots and mustard splotches when gravid/non-receptive when not in the presence of a male.

If a non-receptive/gravid female veiled meets a male veiled she will inflate her body, hiss, gape, lunge at the male if he is close enough, rock back and forth, darken her background color to almost a black. If the male doesn't leave, then she will attack.

When the veileds are put in a new situation they will get dots and the colors will change...I usually refer to this as them showing apprehension.

Heres a couple of pictures of my female veiled.

Technical question, what site do you guys use for your picture share?

Awesome post Kinyonga!

Thanks Brad!

I hope it will help people to understand a bit what the colors mean.
Of course the colors will be different with different species...but many of them use the same or similar postures.

This was Jake when he saw Fred (my other male veiled).

This is Jake pacing while looking at Fred. You can see his tail coiling and uncoiling... I would also like to add that he started to pace like this after he humped my hand.

Here are 3 different male veiled I have:

There are also Orange Variety, Sunburst Variety, Translucent Variety etc.

The really do have a variety when angry. I've only seen Clyde really angry two times. Once when I was moving around a stick and it got a little close. The second time was when I tried to pick him up with a glove he didn't approve of.

He looks more like JH's Baltazar...black outlines on his pattern. But its amazing to see angry casques from the other veileds.

Jake and Fred pictures were amazing. How far apart were they went they went into ballistic mode?

LOL 'ballistic mode'! Jake on the ruler was about 12-15 feet away from Fred who was outside in one of my Ficus trees. The video of him strutting his stuff on the stick was just after he had tried to mate with my hand. He was also looking up at Fred in his cage from time to time (about 8-10 feet away). Fred was glued to the side of the cage peering through some leaves watching Jake. He was also puffed up. It was funny watching Jake because he was trying to get back onto my hand. He would walk from one end of the stick to the other, back and forth. I kept switching my hand that was holding the stick from one end to the other. He seemed to get annoyed and just stood there puffed up for a while. Then I put him away in his cage.

Nice pics everyone, just wanted to especially comment on pohchunyee's first pic. I didnt know veiled can get those bright teal colors. Looks awesome. Mines about 6months now and has only shown the usual shades of browns and green. Just recently I noticed some orange and yellows, but very slightly. Does it come with age? how old is the teal veiled? Again..nice pics.

Niji Jr. is almost 2 years old.
Helios is 1 year and 4 months old
Exia is about 7 months old.

Yes, chameleons gets more colorful with age usually until adulthood. They tend to get more colorful after each shed.
