Veiled Discovered Freedom!

I had my male veiled on a fake tree in our patio for some morning sun. Well ive had him on this tree probably 50 times and no incident. This last time he got adventurous and went for a little walk. By the time i came back (10 mins later) he was clibing the stucco almost to the roof of a 2 story house. i got him down and put him in his cage, and ever since then he is always roaming his cage clawing at the sreen trying to find a way back to freedom. Has anymore had a similar experience with letting their chams sun outside?

Oh man, do I have some stories to tell...
they LOVE to go roaming when you're not looking
and trust me they KNOW WHEN YOU'RE WATCHING THEM.

I've had to cut down bamboo that was over 30ft (2 stories) tall
just to get taos (ambanja panther) back within reach.
It took me about 3 hours to find him and cutting that stand.. but I eventually did.
Only to have him look at me, as if he was saying:
"what's your problem asshole? I was having fun up there sunning myself"

Don't you guys worry about birds?

The very first day I got my chameleon I set his cage in the treehouse outside and turned around to water the lawn. Not 2 minutes later I turned around and see one bluejay (actually it's a western scrub jay if you wanna get all technical) standing on top of the cage pecking at the screen and the other apparently keeping a lookout. So I run over there and luckily they hadn't actually gotten through the screen yet but they were close...and my poor little chameleon was petrified with fear. Ever since then I don't take him outside unless I'm holding him...and when I build their outdoor cages you'd better believe I'm double layering the screen--one layer on the outside of the 2x4 and one pvc-coated metal mesh layer on the inside. Damn birds.

I take my guys sunning... and I don't take my eyes off them. Birds keep their eyes on things like that from a distance and they KNOW when you are not looking and when to swoop. You are lucky your guy was not plucked right off the stucko. YIKES!!!
And yes... if I turned my back long enough, my veiled would be long gone. He knows I'm his warden. lol So he now has two cages so that when he gets bored of one, he gets time in the other. Both have different sun exposures. It helps... until he catches on... I'll have to build a third... then a fourth. lol

my cham isnt digging at the screen anymore but his always cruising up and down the screen looking for a way out.

yea ive thought about birds, but my patio is pretty much out of bird view. and for that bluejay, you need to stick your cham back out(as bait) and grab a pellet gun...

another story: same fake tree that i alreasy had my cham in, well my iguana was hanging out with me and all the sudden decided to jump into the tree. bert(my cham) got pissed and chased him out of the tree and about 3 feet from the base of it. then bert climbs back to the top of the tree and turns green like hes proud of himself, lol. and all this time i thought my cham was a wimp.

polly want a cracker?

I have all my sub adults in cages of one sort or another
the adults have no real worries from any small birds
The only things big enough that show interest are the Urban Crows
that we have searching the neighborhoods

They've picked off one of my first veileds I had... lifted him right off the grape vines
we had out in the backyard. He was over 8 months old at the time.

I would be concerned about crows, they could take even one of my fully grown males quite easily.
especially if they were caught sunning out in the open,
Haven't seen any flying around in the new neighborhood... so it's generally safe. ymmv.

Lol,thas kool

Crows.... that's my main fear here too. The freakie birds are taking over everywhere. But lately, hawks have been taking kittens and little dogs from their backyards. Snatched one right out of this little old ladies arms the other day here in my town, in California.
