Chameleon Info:
Male Ambilobe Panther chameleon. DOH- 6/29/11. He has been in my care since 9/27/11.
Handling - 1-2 times per day. Usually its to get him outside in his freerange to feed him.
Feeding - 10-20 Crickets per day, usually in the morning after I wake up. I only feed him when he's on his freerange outside in the sun. I rarely let the feeders free range. I usually cupfeed or handfeed. I am planning on adding dubia roaches in the near future. He also got some baby anoles the other day. I gutload my feeders with most commonly apples, grapes, and orange cubes for hydration. I am starting to add butternut squash and zucchini into the mix.
Supplements - I currently use Repti cal w/o vitamin d3 every day. I am going to give him his D3 and multivitamin for the first time tomorrow, since he's been in my care only a little over two weeks. I am going to use Flukers Calcium w/ d3, and zoo meds Herpivite multivitamin. I am planning on ordering Repashy Calcium Plus in the coming week.
Watering - I use a spray bottle. I spray about three times per day, for around three minutes each time. I do sometimes see him drinking.
Fecal Description - They look normal to me. White, with the brown attached to it. Not watery or anything. He has never been tested for parasites. I plan on doing so next month.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Reptibreeze 68 gallon.
Lighting - Reptisun 5.0, with a 45 watt basking light. Lights go on around 10:30 AM and go off around the same time.
Temperature - 78 degrees in the day, and around 72 at night. The basking spot is about 83 degrees.
Humidity - I have not measured humidity levels, but I mist 3 times per day for about 3 minutes each time. (Enough to get everything dripping.)
Plants - I am using a Pothos and Ficus.
Placement - The cage is located in my room. There is a fan in my room which is never on. There is an air vent ABOVE the cage but none of the air hits the cage. It is not a high traffic area.
Location - I am located in Miami, Florida.

Current Problem - I noticed today that Waldo has been closing his right eye. He does not do it often, but he has done it a few times. I looked closely at his eye and did not notice any inflammation or stuck pieces of shed. (He hasn't shed since he's been with me) I am thinking of getting a saline solution if it continues or gets worse. Maybe a shower as well. I don't think he has any deficiencies, but you never know. What do you guys think?

Give the eye a good long spray. He will most likely hate you fr a while but it usually works. Is the uv bulb a coil one?

i would not start throwing stuff into his eyes yet.

you can try a shower treatment.
mist longer in the cage.
gut load better.https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/425-may-2011-gutload.html

implement a preformed source of vit A into his diet.

at three months old with eye shutting from time to time im going to lean towards humidity. although it could very well be vit A issue.

Misting a lot on the eye and in the enclosure has not worked. I am gut loading better as well. I just started to treat him with vitamin A. I got vitamin A softgels that are 10,000 IU, and contain Retinyl Palminate instead of Beta cartine. (Or whatever it is) I poke a hole in the softgel pill and take about half a drop and put it on a cotton cu tip. Once the cu tip has the vitamin A on it, I rub it down the back of a cricket. I then feed the cricket to Waldo. If it is a vitamin A deficiency, he should recover in around 3-4 days. Ill let you guys know how it goes.

No, not Waldo!!!

That's a great technique for giving the Vitamin A. Putting that "Q-Tip" step in there makes it hard to overdo it.

He's already showing improvements. Today his tongue stuck to all the crickets and his eye has been open all day. He just finished shedding for the first time in my care as well. Good day. :)

I spoke too soon. His eye is closing again. It is the third day I have been treating him with vitamin A. Is it vet time?

I agree with the advise to increase water (add a dripper and/or spray for longer) and improve gutloading.

Despite the somewhat inadequate gutload, I think a deficiency from while in your care is unlikely, given that age of the chameleon and that youve not had him very long. Also it sounds as if he's only closing one eye for very short periods of time and only occassionally. Do you have any information on how the animal was kept (and fed etc) prior to your getting him?
I would be cautious of giving such a small and young animal too much preformed vitamin A.

Also worth looking into "Cricket Crack" and the Repashy "Bug Burger"

I had the same problem with John Stamos. I tried the shower, the eye drops, and upping the vit A with no real improvement. He was keeping his left eye closed when he was basking but would open it when he was in low light areas or bottom area of his cage. This went on for a week. I couldn't quite figure it out then my Heat bulb burnt out. I think it was getting too hot (reason for it burning out) and affecting his eye (his eye that was closest to the heat source). went with out a bulb for 2 days when I noticed he was keeping it open. I then went to a lower watt bulb and haven't had any problems since.. Does your info say you have your lights are on from 10:30am - 10:30pm?

I actually ordered bug burger earlier today so it should be here soon. Same with Repashy calcium plus. Thank you for the information. I don't know how he was kept and fed, but I can try and ask Jim from CC. He offered to switch out Waldo for another cham but that is not what I would like to do. And you're correct. His eye is only closed occasionally and for short periods of time.

I will try that. Its not that hot for him, but you never know. And yes, I should have worded that better. It is on from 10:30 AM to 10:30 PM.

I am currently having this exact same issue but I think mine could be humidity... How do I shower him? I have heard people talking about this before like do I just put the shower on pouring down next to a plant he is on or what? I will also try a warm misting tonight when I get home. And are regular saleen solution drops from pharmacy ok to use?? Also my lights are on from 9 30am to 9 30pm to much or what? He does it off and on I have noticed for about 3 or 4 days he also bulges his eye out a lot like something is in it.

Im not a fan of putting a chameleon in the shower, I encourage use of a misting bottle (not just for a couple minutes either) instead. But yes, put the chameleon on a big plant, put plant in shower, turn on shower directed so the water hits the plant and side of the shower stall, not directly at the chameleon.

A plain saline solution can be used to help flush eyes.

I think its worth noting that Vitamin A is not the only thing to think about for eye health. Also important are:
Magnesium, Vitamin E, the family of B Vitamins, selenium, cooper, chorminum, calicum and zinc.

So I administered the eye drops just about an hour ago. His eye right now seems to be great.

However, right after I gave him the eye drops, he was showing symptoms of an RI. He opened his mouth, and made some popping and crackling noises. He seemed to stop though.

I also found him walking on the floor of his cage today. Is something not adding up?

So I have been administering eye drops. At this point, they are NOT helping. He is closing his eye and rubbing it on branches.

Jim from CC says that he may just have a bad eye, which I hope is not the case.

Do you guys think it's time for Terramycin?

Maybe its time to take Waldo to the vet... you mentioned he shed recently for the first time since being in your care, maybe he has a little piece of skin stuck in his eye.. or eye infection. If I were you I'd take him sooner than later, before his health deteriorates. Hope he gets better soon.. Keep us posted

Yeah, I think I should. He was closing his eye and scratching it before he shed, so I wouldn't think that is why. Maybe a bacterial or eye infection? :(

Thanks, and I will keep you guys posted!

Here is a photo of his two eyes compared. Its not a great photo, but if you look closely, you can see his right eye turret is a bit smaller.
