Water Drainage

Colin's new vivarium is coming tomorrow or wednesday (yay! :D) but I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with water drainage.

It's a repribreeze so 3x glass sides, 1x screen side, screen top and glass bottom. I will have a ficus in there so can get an amount of water to drip into that, but theres bound to be excess water - how do you guys deal with drainage?

since you have one side that is screen, maybe you could tilt the viv to where the water would drain out the screen side into a catch pan. IDK

You may check with a glass company/glazer. They could drill the bottome of that enclosure and make some drain holes for you. To me that would be the easiest solution. Then you just put a catch tray underneath that would catch all the excess water.

You would still have standing water inside the enclosure for long periods of time. This would cause bacterial growth in the cage. Which in turn could make the cahm very sick. (uri infection waiting to happen imo)

I considered drilling a hole but the bottom is glass so thats gonna be risky.

At the moment (just as a temporary measure in his current viv) I've had newspaper in the bottom and am using that to soak up excess water and changing regularly. Cleaning it all out is quite an arduous task and not really something i want to continue if i can help of it.

I guess I could try and fashion some kind of tray into the bottom with a grill on top to catch the water without having to remove all the plants/branches etc daily to change the newspaper

Are you getting the glass custom cut? I ask because repti-breeze's are all screen except for the plastic bottom. If so then simply use the provided bottom and drill a few holes for drainage. One less piece of glass to buy

Is the bottom plastic then is it? I was under the impression it had glass sides but I appear to be mistaken!

Yes they have removable plastic bottom bit that can be taken out and cleaned, and they are all screen, no glass models as far as I am aware,

The ReptiBreeze is made of screen... that is why they call it he reptibreeze :D I would imagine they are the same in the UK as they are in the US? If so, the bottom is plastic and you can drill a hole in it for the water to drain out. I like to drill anywhere from three to five holes using a 1/4" bit. In general the crickets don't fit through the hole, and escape, but water gets out just fine. If you are using a live plant, use some sort of stand to raise it up above the hole. Place the plant above the holes and the weight will cause the bottom to bow and the water will drain very easily.

I use a clear paint roller pan andput a tube in the low side. Cut it a lil to fit but all drains to the side and out of the tube into another plant I have outside of the cage.

That is such a good idea! Especially since my cage is on a shelf, water can't go straight down
