Water softener ?

I have a water softener in my house. I'm wondering what y'all thoughts are on this- my jackson seems fine- had him for six months with no probs, just received a panther baby in Thursday. Is there any long term effects of water use for there drippers and mister from my tap?

Do they add it to the water? I don't know if that is true.

The salt is added to some water used to clean the system- it used to clean the substrate that the water runs through. But then that salted water is flushed from the system. I don't think saltwater is what is coming out of the taps.

I may have that wrong but I'm pretty sure that's how it works, unless I'm drinking salted iron-out water. And I'm pretty sure I'm not(not positive- I do have a reverse osmosis filter for drinking water most of the time, but supposedly straight out of the tap is also safe according to a couple of people that have tested it over the years) .

As far as over the long haul- been on this well since 2001 (13 years soon)...
Have seen no ill effects from the water softener on my lizards...

yes it does add sodium thats the idea replacing all the hard stuff with sodium.

it wont be dangerous just not great if you can supply bottled water that will be better.

Just did some quick looks online-
looks like I was wrong- sodium is added to the water in small amounts.
Wow- did not know that.
I guess all I have is my experience then that I have seen no negative effects on my animals- even wee tiny baby chams, tadpoles, frogs, etc have all done fine these past 13 years...

yes there seems to be no real evidence saying it does damage but guess if it can be avoided then do so.
i must admit my dad has one and his fish seem to be doing fine and they live in it. i grew up drinking it so .................... actually DONT DO IT LOL

water softeners add sodium(salt) to the water so it might not be good long term.

Hey Todnedo :)

There are also Salt -less water softeners available in the market.Salt free water softeners are becoming increasingly popular in the water softener market. Being salt free water softeners, no salt is required. Your drinking water will stay, unaffected. These water softeners provide an environment friendly solution.

The Nuvo H20 manor is a salt-less water softener that works over a process called “CHELATION”. This process helps in eliminating hard water minerals from forming scale in pipes and house appliances, without using magnets or electricity. It uses a complete salt-free water softening process and has grabbed some great reviews and you could check out the reviews on water softener review websites.
You should definitely try this one.

Probably adds a pretty small amount to your house water, but the amount will vary depending on the settings of your softener. The harder the source water is the more salt the softener uses, so the amount might be higher. I have super hard iron rich well water and the softener is vital to protect my plumbing. I installed a small undersink RO system so my iron-sensitive birds and herps don't have to drink or bathe in it. The softened tap water is technically fine to drink, keeps soap from building up on everything, and reduces mineral deposits on stuff, but I don't happen to like the taste.
