Water

So I just got a baby veiled. I've had him for about two weeks and I had to get a substrate tray because his cage was drenching everything. It was four days ago and today The tray was almost overflowing. I have a drip system and I mist when I don't have the dripper on but I think it is the dripper that is draining. I also have a screen cage. Does anyone know of any alternatives that would keep him happy and have enough water? Like an automatic mister? I need suggestions. Thanks! -Shandi

Allow me to introduce you to the wonderful world of drainage systems!

Even the best planned enclosures run into water issues. Some claim they never needed drainage, but I am not smart enough to get my cage that balanced apparently. In my old cage, I put a tiny drain in the substrate tray that ran into a bucket. It worked well, but took some thinking to get it right. You should browse through the drainage forum and see if a system there might work for you. Best of luck!

I have the LLL water trays under each of my enclosures. I simply drill a small hole (like 1/2") in a corner of the water tray and set a small garbage can under the hole. This allows the tray to catch all of the water and drain into the garbage can, which gets dumped into the toilet every week or 2. Nothing fancy, but very effective.

I hated our dripper. It always caused the terrarium to overflow with water. We ended up dishing out the 60 bucks to get a misting system, and it was well worth it. I have it go off 3 times a day and it keeps the humidity up without all the water sitting on the bottom of the terrarium. With no dripper I have to make sure to spray for Espio 3 times a day so he can drink which drops some water on the floor, but not nearly as much. I love it, and I don't have to worry about all that standing water breeding bacteria throughout the day.

I understand your pain but an auto mist system should not substitute your drip system. I think having both is very important. I try to provide 2-4 hours a day of drip, plus my aqua zamp system. It all goes back to having good drainage.

I do it the easy way, drill a bunch of holes in the floor, whole cage sits in a oversized tray and is elevated a bit to allow flow and prevent water from pooling under the cage.
Then, I make a hole in the tray, which has been shimmed so the water funnels to that spot, and attach a bulkhead and hose going into a big bucket.

It doesn't look pretty, but it works.
I just have to remember to empty the buckets, or......

Make life easy for yourself and protect your cham, NO substrate, not even paper towels
