I captured this Mantis late last night, while in the front yard.

It was extremely hungry as it ate 4) 1/2" crickets in under 5 mins. I kept him over night to get some photos, and here they are....

"Ello mate!"

"Have you got any good bugs to eat?"

"No no mate....I don't eat Macaroni and cheese!"

"Ahhh ha! Crickets always hit the spot!"

*hmm..hmm..hmmm*

"Did I just catch you checkin out my abdomen?"

Thanks for looking.:)

We caught and kept a mantis and then she laid eggs. She died shortly after but we didn't have the right get up for such a large cluster of tiny mantids, so we threw it out :(

Ditto to the camera! What is it? Absolutely amazing!

If you want to see something really crazy put a mantis on a stick and push that stick to where the mantis can get off right next to a wasp nest. They will sit there all day just destroying that wasp nest

Great photos!

mantis make great, easy pets
I have one that hangs out on the flowers I bring in from the garden. I just pick her up and put her on the next bunch each week. She eats up the little orb weavers and earwigs and such that are on the flowers. Plus she gets a few crickets and mealworms from me of course.

Thanks guys for the comments.:)

I am unsure weather or not I am going to keep this guy, I already have a pair. They are very interesting to watch, and easy to keep. But this guy needs to be free.;)

For everyone curious about my gear, I use a Canon XSi, 100mm Macro lens, and a 430EXII Flash w/a OmniBounce. I use various clamp lights to get different effects aswell. Here is a my set-up:

Thanks JJ, I still have a long way to go before I would be considered a "star", and it's more of a interesting, and fun hobby for me. I'll tell ya what.. If I win the lotto I will become a full time photographer!:D

Like how interesting and random?? Like a Gold Fish riding a bike? j/k man..

I really want to do a "Day in the life of Malicious" deal. Where I take photos throughout the day, from the time I wake up to the time I go to sleep... kinda like a daily documentary of interesting events... well in my case not so interesting events...:) You get the idea....:)

Those pics are really cool! No chance of finding one of those in my back garden, though! Not sure that I'd want to either! Mantids are kind of creepy, lol!

The 'Day in the Life of Jay' pics sound cool though! Be interesting to see what goes on over the pond, lol!;):D

If Seattle-lites would stop using PESTICIDES they might see a mantis now and then.

The Indoor Sun Shoppe down in Fremont will have ooths (call before you go) and go put one up. I got one for each pygmy cage and my raspberry patch.
:D

Cool photos Jay. I thought at the end you were going to feed your guy to the lizards.

Nice pictures Jay! I'm loving them! Damn you and your lense! How much did that cost!! :) brand and model please hahaha
