weather question

The power at my house is currently out  which obviously means no lights for my cham.
I am at work and my boyfriend will be leaving for work shortly.
We live in Florida. The temp is/will be in the low 90's today with humidity.

Is it safe to put him outside on the front porch? He will be out of direct sunlight. I guess I'm just worried about the heat and too much humidity.

I won't be able to get home until around 6pm. So that is 6 hours of outside time.

A day without lights won't hurt your cham at all. Leaving it outside without supervision where something could attack it in its cage might not be a good idea.

Have you ever free ranged him outside before? Is it an adult or a baby? An adult would be fine I would think as long as it has a place to get into some solid shade...a baby I'm not so sure.

I'd be concerned about it wandering away though, are you just gonna place the cage outside?

Edit: Disregard, my computer isn't updating the responses.

agreed i wouldnt laeve the cham out side totally unattended. do you have a basement?

Why a basement, if she has no lights the basement is going to be dark also. And almost no homes in Florida have basements. Thats a northern thing, we have different types of soil in the south with too much ground water for basements to work structurally speaking.

As long as the cham is in the shade and caged and you feel secure that he/she wont be stolen I'd put the cham outside. I regularly leave mine outside all day while Im home. Of course mine are in their sun cages.

Outside is a great idea. Outside on the spur of the moment for the first time on a day when you will not be home to monitor the situation is a bad idea.
Just put your enclosure in a cool part of the house (bathroom with the door closed?) and close the door so it remains cool. The chameleon will sleep in safe temperature for today. no big deal.

My cham is 4-5 months old. We have no basement.
He has never been housed outside before. He does have a secure cage and I'm positive nothing could get into it, unless a human of course.
I received a text from my boyfriend. He was in a hurry to get to work and decided to put him outside on the front porch. He isn't directly on the ground. His cage is on top of a secure stand.

After reading all of your responses I'm starting to worry

How long will you two be away from home? With temps that high even in the shade they need to have lots and lots of water, especially that young.

I totally agree. Well, almost. Why move at all? If it's going to be too hot and humid where it is now then just open the window?

MommaLauren, I am a fellow floridian and can give you some advice about having your chameleon outside for many hours during the day.My advice with the hot months coming up is to not do it, unless you are home to keep checking on his well being. First of all, your chameleon is young so I feel the hot temps will probably be harder for him to handle. Watch for your chameleon holding his mouth open while outside. If he is doing this, then he is trying to thermoregulate to cool down. If he does it, and pretty much stops after a very short time, then he is ok. Do not let him continually sit with his mouth open though because he just might overheat then. Make sure whereever you have the cage that it is tested throughout the day for when the sun shifts that he has SHADE at all times during the period when the sun shines in. My neighbor lost his Cockatoo this way. Put it outside when it was shady and when the sun started coming around the house he was not aware that the bird was sitting totally in the hot sun! Run a dripper all the time while he is in the cage outside. Come out periodically and mist the cage down to cool your cham off. I do not let my chameleon outside unless someone in my family is home to check on him. I would not feel safe leaving him out there all day, especially in our hot temps this time of year.
