Weeping fig

I like the weeping fig. It’s for a Jackson’s cham. My terrarium is a Zen Habitats measuring 48x24x24.
I’ve read where it says that the fig trees are sold at 3ft tall. How often do you need to exchange them for a smaller one? Do they need to be pruned? Trimmed? thanks.

you can prune to control growth.
Careful with the white sap, it might be irritant to your cham.

An umbrella plant might be a better option, as it’s sturdier. I guess it depends on how big/heavy your cham is. That’s just my two cents

You don't necessarily need to exchange them, and they don't necessarily need to be trimmed/pruned, but if you want to keep the same one and control its size, trimming is the way to do it. Then as it grows, the branches will become thicker (sturdier) as well.

Be aware however, that they can be quite sensitive.
Why is Ficus Benjamina known as the Weeping Fig?
This is because of the sensitive nature of the plant. Ficus Benjamina reacts to almost any stress like over or under watering, low light, moving it from one place to another, lack of nitrogen etc. by shedding leaves. Although the plant does not like being moved, it adapts to the new place in no time and shows the growth of new & healthy leaves.

I’ve been looking for an umbrella tree and I can’t find one ☹️ Where did you purchase yours?

You can keep a tree to size by pruning the leaves and the edges of the root ball and replant it. ☺️ It was on an episode of the chameleon Academy podcast on plant care.

The two of you are in different states. IDK if that would make a difference or not.

While many plants can be gotten online & mail order, shipping on mature plants (big enough for a centerpiece in an enclosure) may be prohibitive, so buying local may be preferable (plus you can inspect & choose in-person). ;)

Umbrella trees ( Schefflera arboricola ) are common enough to be found in big-box stores (Home Despot, Lowes, W-mart, etc.) and at most garden stores. You likely know where your local big-boxes are; I'd start looking at garden stores here:

...and expand outward. Many/most good garden stores have searchable websites, or you can call to ask if they have what you're looking for. ;)

I have been hunting for an umbrella tree. Can't seem to find one, they should be in season in spring. Checking out a nearby nursery soon.
I checked everywhere Home Depot said that they don’t have any like ever (at least mine and the ones around me) 🤔 but did buy other plants, went to Lowe’s as well none and I went several times after. Went to a local nursery none, went to Walmart did find some plants there. I’m gonna probably drive out an hour just to get one that’s how badly I want it 😂

Same here!

Hello all, any opinions on THIS Weeping Fig? It’s for a Jackson’s chameleon in a Zen Habitats 48x24x24 enclosure. Thanks

That’s really expensive. Have you looked at LLL Reptile or The Bio Dude for them?

Edit: never mind, I wasn’t looking at the smallest size

I was just checking out the Bio Dude and found the umbrella tree HERE. I’ve decided to go with it. Searching for a plant for my terrarium I feel like a kid in a candy store. Will it do for a Jackson? Any other plants you’d consider?

The plants I’m interested in are average 30“ in height. My terrarium is 48” high. Will they be high enough for the Jacksons to bask under? If not how tall should a plant be?thanks

I went to lowes the other day to purchase plants and they had a bunch! It was inside in the garden area. You could probably check there ?

You could always just buy the tallest plants you can find and while you are waiting for them to grow set up a basking branch. I think the leaves, depending on the plant might get in the way of basking.
