well, im back at it!

those of you who remember me havent seen me in months, and many of the new names on here havent ever seen me some of you may know that earlier this year i was working 3 jobs, going to school, and attempting to move...all at the same time while trying to take care of 2 chams, a boa, 10 leopard geckos, and a cave gecko. well, i ended up finding homes for both my chams to make sure they were getting the max amount of care and attention that i couldnt give them during this time, i gave away all my leopard geckos, but i still have my snake (thor), and cave gecko (pheo!). i didnt think id get back into chams until i was done with school and moved out on my own, but i told myself im at the point where if a cham needs help, i can at this point properly take care of it...life has finally settled down.

sooo what happens? i get a call from the local petco manager about a cham i had pointed out a week before because it had bowed elbows. he told me the vet said i was right, and he knows my experience with chameleons, and reptiles in general, so he would "specially" adopt him to me if i could take him! sooo i picked him up yesterday :3

pardon my super loooong story, but everyone, meet charlie!

i already have him eating dusted crix, and drinking calcium enriched water from a dropper! and it hasnt even been 24 hours.

Question, did you happen to leave your phone number with the PetCo manager? I think it would be wonderful if more stores - Petco and PetSmart and others - would do something like this.


Having worked at PetSmart I know that it is very possible to "adopt out" a reptile to someone for specified reasons - I am SO glad that Petco decided to do that in this case.

i actually met the general manager on a reptile forum a few weeks before, once i met him in person when i was picking up some red eyeds from their reptile ralley event is when i had mentioned about the chameleon and did leave my number. he explained to me that when an animal is sick, petco can only adopt the animal out for 50% the original price (would be $150 in my case), but because i had somewhat of a reputation in the area, he greatly reduced that in hopes that id take him. i used to hate petco in terms of reptile care, but now that i know a manager personally and know that he will trust my judgement when i say something is wrong, my hope is restored! if only all the stores could have a manager like that :/

updates on charlie:

in 2 days he has mastered the art of dropper drinking, and now chases it around lol. ive been mixing in liquid calcium with the water in his dropper, and his dripper. now that he will take from a dropper, ill just start giving his dosage straight and then water right after. not sure if hes been eating, he ate on yesterday in front of me, but he doesnt like the cup, so ive free ranged a few and havent seen them....but im not sure if he ate them, or they got out (theres a couple holes in the screen). he tried to get one this morning and ended up smooshing it on the side of his face, then rubbing it off...hes been spending most of his time basking, or by the uvb, the bulb is only 4 months old, but his new one should be here any day...he climbs the screen like a pro, but still loses his balance on the dial rods and catches himself with his tail...im going to try thicker rods, and if those dont work, maybe covering them in cloth or something that he can use his nails on. ill try to put him in the shower tonight to make sure he is hydrated, he hasnt pooped or urate since his first initial "cage marking" lol.

its official...charlie loves me! he pooped in my hand lol. still kind of worried about his poop, its super slimy and stinky and had air bubbles in it...i checked it out (im gross) and theres no visible parasites in it, just normal poop and extra mucus. maybe its because he was on a diet of mealworms at the shop? im going to see if one of my college friends or even someone at my school wants to take a sample and do a quick smear and see what they can find. id take him to a vet and get a fecal, but petco uses the most expensive vet in the area and fecals are like $50 there -.- and i just paid that to adopt him...which kind of leaves me strapped for cash for awhile.
