Hi everybody,
I just bought a veiled chameleon on Sunday and I am trying to make sure that it is getting the best nutrition possible, I am seeing alot of things that you CAN give them but I want to see things that you CAN'T so I can make sure i don't buy them on accident.
The feeders you buy are safe in regards to being good for chameleon food. Some people chose to catch their own bugs outside which is ok but you have to make sure they have not been exposed to pesticides that could be passed on to your chameleon. I read on here once also that a member's chameleon ate a bunch of lady bugs in an outdoor enclosure and died and they somehow determined that the lady bugs were toxic to the chameleon. What kine of feeders are you considering buying? Mealworms are used by members but somewhat frowned up due to thier body being most made of exoskeleton and not much meat. They are said to cause digestive problems such as constipation if given too much. If you use those, just try and use those in moderation. Make sure you feed your feeders well. Crickets and superworms along with Dubia roaches if you ever use them can be fed a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Yeah, were you talking bug-wise or veggie-wise? Carol covered the bug thing, but if you're talking veggies there's a few good links that break down the gutloading guidelines and if you look at those you'll see which veggies are better than others & why. So the chameleon could eat those same veggies too, but then they are what they eat rule applies so what you feed the bugs goes into the chameleon, so you're going to want to feed your feeders those same good veggies too and the chameleon will get the benefits that way.
Avoid:
waxworms
pinkies
wild caught slugs
wild caught snails (captive cultured are good though)
mealworms and superworms and other fatty larva in excess of 20% of the overall diet
lady beetles
most butterflies
fireflies
large numbers of hard shelled feeders
anoles (unless you breed them yourself)
Avoid gutloading with:
spinnach, large amounts of kale, cabbage, animal food (dog, cat, fish), meat, cheese/dairy, and anything that contains more phosphorous than calcium
Carol,
I have been feeding him meal worms and crickets. He seems to really like the crickets but doesn't touch the worms so I need tofindsome different feeders. I will try the ones that you suggested!
To the second reply,
Do you have those links for what to feed the feeders?
And thank you for helping me know what not to eat everybody: )
