My guess is also mold from the fruits- BUT...DO NOT dump it outside, freeze it first, then toss in the trash. IF it is mold, don't start new ones from this, you will only contaminate the new ones with mold spores.
Now..when a culture gets " old" it will turn funky blackish as it ages, but should NOT smell rancid- we make around 300 to 400 cultures a month, if ever in doubt- THROW IT OUT
