Hello,

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what kind of potting soil to use when I transplant my Ficus for my Chameleon cage? Having a hard time finding one with no fertilizers. Thanks

Get a bag of Miracle Grow organic potting soil at Home Depot or Lowes (not sure if they have it cause I got mine at HD). There's no fertilizers in it, just good organic soil.

Thanks for the quick response Timorbob. I'm heading to Lowes this afternoon so I will pick some up there hopefully if they have it:)

I still have my plant in the soil and container it came in from walmart... Do I still need to change out the soil if I cover it up with screen or put rocks over it? Whats the reason for changing the soil anyways? Just curious...
thanx in advance! :D

well, perlite is white and i dont see ne of that mixed in the soil. Althought i do see lil green round pellets???

Alot of the soils come with slow release fertilizer pellets in it.

As far as the organic potting soil, I mix it with sand to help with drainage and prevent root rot.

So, it'd be safe to say that both perlite and or the slow release fertilizer are harmful to ur cham if injested, ok.

What about putting screen over the soil or rocks, so he can not get to the soil?

I would say as you have a male the rocks should be sufficent (however i wouldnt risk it)

if you had a female then it would be a certain NO NO!

Adding soil, and transplanting to bigger pots promotes plant growth. I add a little potting soil mix to the top of my indoor plants, every so often. In a weeks or two after, I can really see the difference in my plants.

Cool, thanks for the input Leedslad88, & SSimsswiSS :D
I will put some bigger rocks or some screen when i get back home, and later I will get him a bigger pot for his plant and the right soil suggested.

You should be able to find Whitney Farms pottting soil in PDX.

There might be a very small amount of perlite or vermiculite in it but it is easily picked out. It does not contain fertilizer.

As long as you use all organic with no additives like plant steroids and other crazy additives you should be safe.

I've heard and experienced bad things about walmart's store brand organic soil (earthgro?). I think I saw someone say their cham got pinworms from it but unfortunately that was after I used it. The runoff from it is disgusting regardless, and it did not drain well enough to sustain a schleffera so I eventually took it out.

If you use Miracle Grow, be sure it is actually organic. I've actually seen Miracle Grow labeled as "organic" but then reading closer you find out it has chemicals.

I will recommend what I use, which I discovered from searching every damn thread here about dirt: a 50/50 mix of play sand and cocoa husk. The plants seemed to have a hard time when first being transferred to this but they are thriving now, and I don't have to worry about the mist king drowning them. Plus you know you aren't getting chemicals, parasites, or pieces that could impact a cham unless it's down there just straight up intentionally eating large amounts of dirt. Unlike a lot of organic soils, the runoff doesn't smell bad either.

I also see "super soil" recommended frequently but I could never find any.

Never thought about the organic soil containing parasites but it totally makes sense as a major component of most organic soils is in fact organic waste
