Ill post the video I just recored of his cage, hes about to get his first kill in his new cage..
UH oh. Where do i start.
First of all, get rid of that red bulb and get a normal 40 watt basking bulb. What kind of UVB do you have to?
Next, Chameleons don't drink from water dishes. They need moving water. Either get a dripper or get a mister. Both will work best
Also, Get rid of the substrate at the bottom of the cage. If chameleons should for a cricket that is on the substrate and get some of the substrate along with the cricket, it can lead to impaction. You dont want that. Juts put some paper towel or newspaper
The red bulb isnt good? is from Zoo Med and its a nocturnal infrared heat lamp...75 watt
No the red bulbs aren't actually very goodfor the chams. Plain household incandescent bulbs work just fine. What kind of UVB does he have?
I'd get some more plants in there. What size is the cage? If he's 2 weeks old it's probably too big.
Edit: the red bulbs don't shine 'white' light like the sun, and it keeps them awake at night. Veileds are known to eat dirt and substrate so it's still a risk if it's bark or something.
its coconut husk
There is no problem with that being in your enclosure. It helps keep in the humidity and although people recommend substrate for pygmy chameleons, they suffer the same risk of impaction as true chameleons.
The only thing I would recommend is add some live plants, and swap out that red light for a 60 watt housebulb. Something you may want to consider is putting in some hydroton balls on the very bottom, put a layer of screen on top of it, and then add organic soil, that way your plants don't have to sit in a pot.
There is nothing wrong with having a substrate so don't worry about everything else you've been told. I have been keeping a few species with substrate since the day I got them, and there have been absolutely not issues. Woodchips are a different issue but what you have is fine.
Yes, that will provide an adequate basking spot for him, just make sure he can get under it, but also have about 5-6 inches between him and the light.
btw the bowl is to catch the drops from my dripperIm not sure theres a "link" but I can give you a list.
60 watt housebulb
fake vines(biovine is a popular brand) or sticks that have been cleaned from outside.
A plant for coverage ( ficus, or umbrella(schefflera) plants work well)
hydroton (optional)
organic soil (optional)
I also did not see a UVB light. If you dont have one you will need a 5.0 linear UVB bulb and a fixture for it.
dont forget to ditch the bowl.
