I recently acquired a 12x12x18 Zoo Med terrarium. What should I put in it?!

How about thinking of an animal you´d like to keep first and THEN get a cage?
Just keeping a species because it fits the terrarium is not the right way in my opinion.

I love all reptiles and amphibians, so I don't think it has to be about wanting a specific one. I think there is a lot of merit to the experience of caring for many different types of animals over time, even if some of them may not have been animals that I saw and HAD to have. Regardless, the terrarium was given to me.
I'm leaning toward putting some type of frog in it right now, but I want to get suggestions from other people first. I've seen some great suggestions here on other threads of this nature (for example: https://www.chameleonforums.com/55-gal-tank-what-tenant-move-63583/) for animals I would not have thought of myself, so I wanted to throw the question out there.

either way is OK.
Most people buy an aquarium the size they can afford and then choose the fish that would be happy in the tank. Terraria can sometimes be the same way.
OP- how about a pair of poison dart frogs?

I mean there´s nothing wrong with doing things like this, i just think that the animal will become a "second choice" easily this way.
I´d always recommend to try and get what you want the most because then you´ll be really happy and uch more enthusiastic about the care.
That´s at least the experience that i have made (e.g. with fish
)

Thanks - that's exactly what I've been thinking about. I've been doing some research on Josh's Frogs and I think I would really enjoy setting up a viv for them. Is there a specific species you suggest? JF suggests D. tinctorius, D. leucomelas, or D. auratus as good starter frogs.

I understand what you mean. Trust me though, I am very enthusiastic about my animals' care. I really love them all. And I love the experience of new animals.
Just to clarify, I would never get something like a dog just because I had an extra crate. Something that requires hours of daily interaction is not an animal I will spontaneously get. But something that only requires feeding/misting/cleaning out cage isn't a big deal. What's one more reptile/amphibian to add to my daily routine?

I think this is the beginning of doing the research to find out what he'll really like and want the most. One has to start somewhere and reaching out is a good idea. Personally, I like the very natural looking vivariums that can be done with those cages with live plants, mosses, rock and woodwork, etc. Dart frogs look great in them. Of the ones I've tried so far (only three) the Azureus morph of D. tinctorius was the most bold and fearless. They're always out in the open and usually won't hop away unless your hand is just a couple inches from them. Otherwise, a small day gecko species like Phelsuma klemmeri or that bright blue Lygodactylus species I can't think of might be cool, too.

I think it is wonderful that you asked this question BEFORE you acquired an animal that was unable to fit in the cage just because you believed you liked it more than a species that you would equally like and could easily live in a terrarium of that size. Good for you on your research! Poison dart frogs are pretty interesting, unique creatures that have many options available. I think that is a wonderful idea!
