I was just wondering what type of enclosures and what size people use to house their male panther chameleons in the uk due to the temps being lower and keeping the humidity up ?

i use a reptarium with alot of live plants to keep the humidty up and a dripper and i mist 3-4 times a day thats how i keep my humidty up

What size reptarium do u use ? I have a umbrella plant and ficus going to add a hibiscus to just got it outside at the mo waiting for it to produce a but more coverage. I use a dripper to abs think the third plant will help increase the humidity further

I'm not from a cold area at all, but I imagine that a 2x2x4 foot screen cage could work if you add a shower curtain to the back three sides, plants, and mist to keep the humidity up. The plastic will also keep in more heat as well.

I just don't think a glass enclosure of that size is affordable, or feasible. Way too heavy! But since you do want the cham to have lots of space, I think looking for ways around the humidity and temp issue in a screen cage are the way to go.

Although, as a passing thought, have you thought about building your own cage? You could use wood for three of the four sides, and that would keep in humidity. And with this option you can choose how large you want the cage to be.

here in western Canada it's cold & dry. I've used large wooden enclosures for male panthers and veiled with good results! Two or three sides wood with one or two glass/screen doors. Ventilation is key! Also you must seal the wood or the whole thing will eventualy rot. I've used marine varnish, the stuff they use on wooden boats. It worked well but takes many coats and smells for a long time. My last build I I had a handy friend use shower stall liner and basicaly build me a mini shower. Now all my chams are in the same room and I use all screen cages as I am able to maintain hest and humidity in the whole room

Sandra, is that how you make your cages waterproof, paint them with latex?

Along with caulking in all seams, they are very much Water resistant, yes. I dont have massive amounts of water going all over the show, so really the cages dont get very wet most days. My chameleons drink 99% of their water from drippers, which are far more controlable than huge amounts of misting. Extra water falls into a little collection pan. I do mist, just not nearly as much as those who are trying to provide drinking water that way. Occassionally one of those collection pans will get dumped, and water will sit in a big puddle for awhile, but the latex is sufficient for that.

Think about all the humidity in your shower/bath room, or the rain that hits a painted house. Paint is quite effective as a moisture barrier.

It makes perfect sense, I can't believe I never thought about it. I think I will try that next time I build a cage.

Thank u all for ur replies it's interesting see what others use and what works to house their chameleons I have a 24 24 36 screen cage and have also covered three of the sides to help keep the humidity in. I also use
a dripper for a drink in the day.
