Where Do I Find A Large Glass Terrarium

Hey,

My faly is getting to that point where his current cage is starting to look a bit too small. I'm going to need another glass terrarium because of the temperature and moisture (I'm in a basement so theres some issues I'm trying to avoid). I know I'm probably going to get questions about why I cant do screen, and believe me, if it was a doable option for me, I would. It has to be glass unfortunately.

So, that being said, I'm in Canada (southern ontario). I've been looking for several hours with nothing. I'm looking for a minimum of 24x24x48 but I would prefer if it was 36x36x(48-60). Does anybody know where I can find something like this?

im not sure they make glass cages that big.

my suggestion, depending on how handy dandy you are.. is to make it.

The only ones I know that usually make tanks that size are these guys: http://glasscages.com/?sAction=ViewCat&lCatID=4 I know they deliver to reptile shows, so you may have to coordinate something, but their cages are pretty great. I have one of their large tanks for my geckos.

Besides them, I have no idea. At least nothing in the depth that you need, because I've seen tanks that at about 48" x 48" but then are only 12" deep or so.

Im sure you've tried this aleardy but kijiji might have one that someone has aready made. Again i dout it but you never know

Like camimom said if your handy you can make one.... its pretty easy if yo can get your hands on a table saw or get someone to make the cuts for you.......you coud just use 2x2's cut it in the middle so it slides right in and on all th sides so it stays in place in that case if its posible you could put some sort of screen for ventalation on mabe the top half of the sides if you wanted .seeing as you would make it your self

Even if you managed to find something that size it would be a nightmare to move or ship. You can however, create basically the same idea by building a cage the size you want and attaching plexiglass or even sheet plastic panels over each side. I like to use "crystal clear" vinyl shower curtains. They are heavy and hang fairly nicely, are a lot less expensive than plexi (though I do have a 36"x48"x24" cage with plexi panels over it too), and you can custom trim them for ventilation or even take them off when conditions permit.

i've already tried kijiji and put up three ads earlier today in three major cities (k/w, london, toronto). hopefully i get a hit

i was also thinking, what if i took a huge aquarium, put it on its side, and did a few modifications? the giant gaping hole in the (now) front would obviously need to be filled with plexiglass or screen. but is there a way i could remove what would be the top and replace it with screen? just an idea

A lot would depend on the shape of the aquarium. So many of them are narrow rectangles (wide and tall when viewing from the front but not much depth) that don't actually provide much useable space for a cham to climb around. If you set it vertically on one end you get a tall narrow shape. If you lay it on one side it won't be tall enough. The air exchange can be a problem too...unless you have some sort of small fan or air exchanger incorporated into the design.

I think I've found my only two options at this point. The first is to go with the exo terra 36x18x36. I know its a touch small for a panther, but its got the width I'm looking for and I can get it locally.

The other option is CornelsWorld. I found him online. He seems to be a custom reptile enclosure builder. Has anybody had any experience with him or his cages? Does anybody know how a monster of a cage like what I'm looking for could even be shipped from there to here...?

I havent had any eperiance with him.but yuou would have to see who he shipps through or if you find someone your self like fed ex and you would have to call the chossen shipper and ask.... or just ask him he would know best....... chances are that if he could ship it to you it would cost you alot of $ to do so because of the weight

Although I have never personally ordered from him (Greg, I believe his name is) is a very respected builder of all sorts of custom enclosures and racking systems, he travels to shows relatively frequently, and I have never heard of a single negative comment made about him. If you do a search on reptilescanada.com I'm sure you will be able to decide for yourself if he is the right choice for you! Good luck in your search!

I don't know about a dealer in Canada, but it wouldn't be terribly difficult to make a cage from acrylic or plexi glass and wood. Then you can add screen where ever you want and can make the panels removable/interchangeable with screen panels.

Edit: The Exoterra 36x18x36 is cheaper than the penn plax.

i understand that building it is fairly simple. i have quite a bit of experience in furniture building, and building my own cage was actually always the idea. but things have changed a little. building it is probably out of the question at this point just because of time constraints that i have with school, work, and my lab internship. i appreciate the suggestion, but i'm really just looking to purchase something if at all possible.

Hey I don't know if someone has mentioned these but just incase they haven't you should give this a go:
-Exo Terra Large X-Tall (pretty suitable for an adult yemen or panther, especially if you provide free-range time).

-Believe it or not, store showcases. Jewellery stores and trophy cases work great for reptile enclosure! Not only can they lock but they are also very durable since they are made with protection in mind. I used to house a bearded dragon in a 4 foot long full glass showcase that I found on craigslist (similar to Kijiji) for only $100. Trophy cases would be super suitable for larger chams because they are taller then they are wide. They often have a wood backing so you can drill holes to put cords through. I highly suggest you look into it!

Cheers and best of luck :D

i've never thought of display cases. thank you! i'll be sure to look into that.

as for the exo terra, i was aware of those from the beginning. they're just incredibly expensive for what you get (lowest quote i got so far was $359) and a tiny bit smaller than what i was hoping for. its my last resort at the moment

I just picked up the Exo Terra Medium X-Tall for $220, which I was pretty excited about. It'll house a juvenile to sub-adult chameleon appropriately, and eventually will become a small chameleon species permanent home.
But definitely look into showcases and trophy displays. Look through your classifieds for stores that are closing (going out of business) and contact them about their display cases. Usually they don't have them advertised for sale but once their stock is depleted or it's time to hand over the key to their doors they'll want to get rid of them, and for pretty cheap too!
Good luck :D
