Where to get Umbrella Plants?

I'm looking to get 2 small or large umbrella plants? Do any of our sponsors sell them? If not where would be a good place to get them. I know 2 places that has the ficus but I can't seem to find the umbrellas.

I'm too scared to buy it from there...haha. We are new to this so don't want to take any chances.

I've gotten plenty from Lowe's. All I did was wash them (rinsed them, then took a towel and gave it a good wipe while still wet) and replanted them in organic soil. Make sure to put rocks on the top of the pot as well. If you have Armstrong Nurseries in your area, they are usually a little more expensive but they sell some as "natural" without any pesticides/insecticides being used.

i got all of my plants at lowes. i originally had a ficus and two umbrellas. now just pothos. the ficus dropped all of its leaves, they do not tolerate the chameleon climbing in them very well. i just removed the two umbrellas yesterday as they have root rot.. they could not handle me misting twice a day. not really sure why. i repotted them in organic pesticide and fertilizer free soil with rocks on top and bottom and still encountered issues

Hmm I have to look into that then. Which plant do you guys think the panthers prefer between the umbrella and ficus?

I'd go with the umbrella because I'm pretty sure ficus trees drop their leaves. I'm not positive but my panther likes his umbrella tree and I haven't had a problem out of it.

So we got an umbrella plant from HD to test out. We did everything recommended but the only thing I don't like is that after repotting and going up the 1.5-2" pot, we have this huge pot that looks weird. I was thinking of just doing pothos. Any of you guys just use pothos? I almost ordered/bought 3 large umbrella plants. Good thing we just tested it out with just one first.

Yeah our HD had quite a few. Lowes only had 2. The only issue with the ones from HD is the pot size. We have a medium sized umbrella with this ginormous pot... Haha.

Pothos will live in totally drenched soil from misting, grow fast, you can train them to grow into horizontal highways, and hang them so there is no pot on the floor for easy cleaning.

Both Umbrella and Ficus drop leaves eventually.

All I have is one 10" pot Pothos in my cages, and it is all that is needed.

CHEERS!

Thanks for the info! What is it hanging on? How do you have it secured?

Also forgot to ask, what size cage to you have the 10" pothos in? We have a 24x24x48. And I'm assuming you repotted the pothos? Thanks.

I understand but just replant the plant into a nice flower pot (with new soil) with a water tray and ull be perfect and good to go!

You didn't read the whole thread...haha. We did replant and the issue is the size of the pot. HD has the umbrellas in huge pots to begin with. The rule of thumb per my research when re potting, is going up 1.5-2" pot. Now we ended up with a huge heavy pot and I don't think it's a good idea to use it with out set up.

I think when we removed the old soil, we might have over done it too. It's a learning experience but I'm on vacation this whole week and trying to get things done and done right.

How to hang a pothos plant in your screen enclosure

I have ficus plants for my smallest chams and a mix of ficus, pothos, and umbrella plants in my larger enclosures. The best way I've found to hang plants in my screen enclosures is to buy a 1.5" x .5" x 8' board from Lowes for less than $2. Then I cut the board to the width of the enclosure plus 1" (usually 19" or 25"). Then I just lay the board across the top of the enclosure being certain that both ends of the board rest on the frame (not the screen) of the enclosure. Then I take one or more screw-in hooks of the desired size and screw them into the boards from inside the screened enclosure. The board is on top, outside of the enclosure and the screws are inside the enclosure and I use the screw the punch a tiny hole through the screen and into the board above. The board the the frame take the full weight of the plant and the screw makes just a tiny hole in the screen which is covered over when you fully screw in the hook. Then I hang my plant on the hook using the provided hanger already attached to most pothos pots.

Excellent info! Thank you for writing that out. We do have dragon ledges but installed them without the intentions of having any pothos. I think I would have changed the placements of the ledges. I know I can make it work some how.

I have dragon strand ledges as well.

I installed the top back and side ledges about 10" down from the top give or take an 1" or 2" on the side ledges.

I then took my wandering jew from HD, poked holes on opposite sides of the pot, got a branch a couple inches wider then the pot and zip tied it on.

I then placed the branch attached to the pot catty-corner on top the ledges and zip ties it on.

It looks great!
