Which butterflies are poisonous?

anyone know? What about monarch, black and yellow swallow tails, black butterflies, yellow ones? My Romeo is such a fussy eater lately. Does not even really want supers. I figured maybe he would like something like that to eat. I have had no luck catching moths at night that are of any size value. Thanks.

Dont use Monarch or swallow tails. Dunno about the others. Probably easier to ask "which butterflies are known to be safe"

Have you tried butterworms, silkworms, terrestrial isopods, etc?
Butterflies and moths arent very nutritious.

moths are relatively fine, butterflies not too sure. as sandra said monarchs are poisonous because of the milkweed they eat in the wild. generally, bright colors mean warning, so i would stay in those guidelines, and if you capture a moth or butterfly, post a pic on here so the experts can help you out

ever think about breeding your silk and hornworm moths?

yeah I have some silks right now that he wont touch. Some crickets, some supers. He loves the silk moths but my silks are way far away from turning into moths. I quit buying horns cause he did not seem to interested in those either last time I had them. I caught a Palmettto bug which is basically a roach and he turned away from that also. I know he is hungry cause he tried eating a lizard again that was loose in my patio. He shot his tongue out as far as he could a few times but the little guy was too fast. I really don't want to feed any lizards to him, if he gets one on accident then so be it. He ate a super a couple of days ago and I shoved like 4 small silks in his mouth while he was eating! lol! He is quite active and drinking, just not wanting to eat what I am offering. I dont think it is a health issue, just a matter of not liking whats on the menu!!!

usually the bright colored ones are the most poisonouse

no, i dis-agree, that is for frogs, butterflies are a whole different story, i only know that swallow tails are poisonous:cool: but I'm not sure about the others i could easily make a prediction but i know so many types i could not be 100% sure, so use the 100% predictions!!!!:eek::eek::eek:

I feed off painted ladies.

monarchs are bad because of the milkweed they eat... if you can raise them up on some other diet, you could feed them off.

My guys LOVE the painted ladies. They'll even snatch them out of the air as they fly by.

ok, thanks! Good to know. Not that I have painted ladies flying around my yard I don't think????? Thanks to everyone else for their feedback. It was just a thought cause I am frustrated about my fussy eater! Hopefully he will eat when he is really hungry as I stated before I do not think there is any type of health issue going on.

I am not sure what this has to do with Chameleons eating but it did work for Ozzie. I think he went like 3 weeks and I was getting worried so I read somewhere on the net that "Reptaid helps with eating problems and so I bought some and gave him the recommended dose every day for 10 days and after the 3rd day on it Ozzie actually started eating horn worms and he never eats horn worms! Now he is completely off of the Reptaid and he is eating everything in sight.....I know it maybe a coincidence but hey this stuff is all natural and as far as I am concerned it has helped Ozzie.

Ozzie drools over painted lady butterflies and I need to find somewhere that I can order a large amount.

Hello Carol! Sorry your cham isnt eating. I wouldnt even attempt to feed him for 3 or so 4 days. Sometimes they just get bored of there food and the more they see the bugs the less interested they are in them. It happens. Just to be safe though, you should get fecal done. I use a great vet in Greenacres if you need one.

Skippers, cabbage, rusty reds, peacocks, painted ladies, etc. are all safe to feed. Most butterfly species have some sort of toxicity to them, moths on the other hand are Ok for the most part. Butterflies have few that are non-toxic while moths have few that are. :)
