I use a mix of 'eco earth' (the expandable brick stuff) and play sand. Earthy type medium is more natural to them and easier to dig through than sand alone.

Not sure. It is a substrate 'brick' that expands when you add water to it. If you want to use whatever you would re-pot plants with then choose an organic soil/compost that doesn't have any fertiliser balls or polystyrene balls added to it.

I use play sand. The kind you would have in a child's sand box. Here's my egg laying/laying bin blog linked below and also Dez's wonderful video on making a laying bin.

She already has a playsand egg laying bin but it takes up room where another plant could fit so i thought i could use a large pot with a plant in it so she could still lay eggs and have another plant

I would not recommend them having to dig through the roots of a plants. It's very hard on the females as it is with any extra work.
