My first chameleon was a Jacksonii Jacksonii which I purchased in a reptile show in 1990 I was just fascinated by the species because it Remind me of a movie that I saw when I was young and that was Journey to the Center of the Earth that was cool....Lol..
I love the challenge of everything that goes into having healthy chameleons. I love their fascinating behaviors and their quirky eyes and mitten feet. I also find them relaxing- my cham room is QUIET. With a three year old it is my sanctuary, cricket smell and all!
Following some of these insightful reasons, mine sounds childish. But I guess that's when I first wanted one, so it fits! I've always liked reptiles, but my mom didn't; we stuck with mammals as pets. She did, however, get me the game Lickin' Lizards which have chameleons as the main component! Now that I'm a big girl, that was the first thing I bought when I moved out! I always liked things that changed color, that seemed a little magical because they could do things that were just so out of the ordinary in my little town. I love the way their tails curl and their little fused, grippy hands. I love their trebuchet tongues and their crazy eyes. And of course, the colors, Duke, the COLORS!
At first, I just got mine as a pet, but it has become a full-out hobby as I'm sure everyone else here has realized, too. Most friends and family think I'm crazy for spending so much time, effort, and money on "just a lizard" but I think, deep down, they are just as fascinated as I am. When my first little guy died, they were so supportive - phone calls, a painting, and even a sympathy card from my mom! hahahaha Now that I'm upgrading everything for my next cham, the eye-rolls are starting, but I know part of them can't wait to see what happens next.
I think it is like when people ask me why I have the tattoos that I have... I have my reasons that are very important to me, that I thought about for years, and those reasons are just too complex to explain in the 30 seconds that I know they will be listening to the answer. SO I love this site because everyone gets it!
