so my cham recently laid 34 eggs on sunday and today she laid 4 more but didnt dig a hole this time she just laid them on top of the dirt in her laying bin. we have had her in her laying bin for about 10 days now, its a home made laying bin/little cage. we have not put her back in her normal cage because after laying 34 eggs on sunday and after she covered the hole, she still looked pregnant!! last time she had eggs she came out skinnier than this time so i asumed she still had more eggs left and maybe was going to dig another hole for some reason? so i dug out the eggs to incubate them and put her back in the laying bin just how it was when we first put her in, i figured maybe shes gonna lay the rest when she rests a bit, i offered her water and crickets, she did drink and eat (and still is today)so i thought everything was normal. i looked up the signs of being egg bound and she does not show any signs of being egg bound, she went back to her normal colors a few hours after laying her first eggs. i gave her privacy like i did when she layed her first eggs and i still didnt see any digging at all but today when i checked up on her to see how she was doing i saw 4 eggs laying on top of the dirt, 2 had broken egg shells and the yok was coming out, the other 2 look fine so i put the good looking ones in my incubator. after laying 4 more eggs today she still looks pregnant. i dont know what to do?? should i dig a hole for her so she can lay the eggs she posibly has left?? i still have to make sure if she still has eggs but it looks like she doas. can anybody tell me for sure in the pics i put up?? and what i should do or if this is bad?

It is not to late to go to the vet and get oxytocin. You can roll the dice if you want but there is a very high probability she will retain at least 1 or 2 eggs. When those rot inside her she will die.

so if we decide to leave her in her laying bin so hopefully she will lay the rest, is there anything we can do to help her lay the rest like dig a hole for her?

She seems to be having some difficulties. Usually they lay them all at once. The fact that she laid some, laid some more and still looks like she has more is a concern. Have you had her cage/laying bin covered?

For tonight I would cover her and leave her alone as it would likely be difficult to find a vet after hours. But a vet trip is a very good idea. An x-ray would be helpful and as seeco said, oxytocin if she still has eggs.

I do like your laying bin idea.

thanks. and yea we covered the bin/cage when she was digging and we uncovered it when she was done, she just dropped another one about 5 minutes ago, im going to cover it again to give her more privacy.

How did you know she was "done"? You must be peeking :p

You can't peek or this will never end.

You need to just completely block the cage from all view and forget about her for 48 hours.

The rest of the eggs, from this point on, are forfeit. Forget about them. You have enough already. Just leave them there.

she WAS DONE. when i checked on her as i do once or twice a day since i put her in her laying bin/cage, when i checked she had already fully covered the hole and was trying to keep pulling dirt but wasnt moving much at all, looked very tierd, so i asumed she was done, at that same time i saw her i offered her water and she drank quite a bit of water. i left the eggs and her in ther for about an hour after giving her water just in case she still felt like putting more dirt on top like she did last time. then i dug up the eggs the incubate and thats when i noticed she seems to still have eggs in her, so i put everything back how it was when i fisrt put her in there about 10 days ago to see if she would dig another hole so she can lay the rest. do you guys think its a good idea to dig a hole for her and mist it so hopefully she can lay the rest in there?

Wow. We obviously have different definitions of DONE. If you know she is laying an egg every 30 minutes then you are peeking at her. I know it is hard to resist but you are playing with fire. This fire won't burn -- it will leave you with a big sad dead corpse with its tongue hanging out and a prolapse popped out of its vent.

IMHO your female is in trouble. They should lay all their eggs at once and fill in the hole and return to the branches, hungry and thirsty. If she's dropping eggs like that its not a good thing....and most of the ones that drop eggs instead of burying them end up with worse problems the next time they have a clutch. Sorry to have to tell you that...and hopefully I will be wrong.

i think you miss understood what i was trying to say. i put her in her laying bin about 10 days ago I normaly check around 10 am and 11pm, 2 times a day, sunday morning she dug a hole and laid 34 eggs, when i checked for the first time on sunday around 10 like everyother day she was on top of the dirt seemed like she was trying to push more ditrt where the hole was but it was already coverd, she wasnt moving much dirt around and looked very tired, so i offered her water and food, she ate and drank plenty, as i was giving her water i noticed she wasnt as skinny like she was after laying her eggs last time and looked like she still had eggs in her so i left her in there i thought hopefully she was going to dig another hole for the rest of the eggs she had, i did uncover her cage/bin to see if she was showing any signs of being egg bound as i looked it up, she did not show any signs of being egg bound at that time. i checked every 30 minutes after i noticed she still has eggs, to see if i would catch her do somthing wierd or not normal, about 3 hours after i uncovered her i decided to checked up on her again and saw 4 eggs laying on top of the dirt in the laying bin/cage, she didnt dig a hole just laid them on top. and thats when i thought i could ask on here why didnt she lay all her eggs on sunday in the hole, they told me to cover her again to give her privicy hopefully she can just lay the rest, and take her to the vet, last night she laid 6 more eggs and looks like she doasnt have any more, im hoping i am right. im still going to keep her in there and covered, i dont want to take her out yet even though she looks like she doasnt have any more n looks very skinny, she might have one or two left and hopefully she can lay them today or tonight.

yes i am aware they are suppost to lay them all at once, i have bred her befor and came out just fine. but this time she dug a hole on sunday and laid 34 eggs and fully covered the hole but she still looked pregnant and wasnt skinny like she was last time she had eggs about 5 months ago, and yesterday laid 4 on top of the dirt and last night she laid 6 more eggs also on top of the dirt. she looks verry skinny now and looks like she laid all the eggs she had. hopefully im right and doasnt have anymore left.

Well an x-ray is the appropriate course of action right now.

If you are not going to do that you should squeeze around and see what you can feel.

You should take her to the vet for an x-ray. Based on this situation I'd say there is a very high likelihood that she could accidently retain one egg, which will kill her. If it were my chameleon, I would take her to the vet in the morning to make sure everything is ok and I would not breed her again in the future.

I hope everything turns out ok.

In this thread...

you said..."she laid 2 out of the hole she maid and 54 total".
This time you said..."yesterday laid 4 on top of the dirt and last night she laid 6 more eggs also on top of the dirt"...so in both cases things did not go the way they should. I hope she laid all the eggs this time and will have no trouble next time...but as I said....most of the ones that drop eggs instead of burying them end up with worse problems the next time they have a clutch...and I still hope that yours will be the exception.

I have had a panther do the same. Yes she finished and had plenty of privacy and buried her eggs completely.. As she has a laying bin with her 24/7. She came out ate drank and basked looking huge after laying 37 eggs. Just to go back and do her thing about week later. I figured she wanted more time for them to develop but I really have no clue. Figured id put that out there since so many people say what a chameleon should do. Well mine did just as the OP explained. Except didn't start dropping them here and there. .

yea this is the second time she didnt lay all her eggs how she is suppost to, i wont be breeding her anymore and take her to the vet to make shes ok.

My girl is laying eggs for the second time ever, but it's the first time since I got her. You think your girl is laying strange, mine has been laying for 5 days as of today. She is a Dwarf, and her normal clutch is supposed to be around 12 eggs. She laid one on day one, 2 on day two, 3 on day three, then none on day four, and today I saw 5 eggs this morning. I put one in her laying bin, which the first owners never provided, and went out of the room. When I came back in 2 minutes, there was her 6th egg of the day. She is covered. I have to leave the lower 8 inches of the front of the enclosure open or there wil be no air flow, so I am able to see if there are any eggs on the floor of the enclosure. I then look down from the top to see into the enclosure to make sure she is okay. So as of right now, she has laid 11 eggs. I worry about why it's so spread out like this, but she looks and acts fine. She's been eating crickets and one fat Butterworm in those 5 days, and I watched her take a drink this morning when I turned on the dripper. She gulped down four swallows. She has done zero digging in the laying bin, and 2 of the 11 eggs made it in the bin. It appears she is just dropping her eggs from the tree top perches and letting them fall. Who are we to decide they're doing it wrong? We've observed it one way and decided that's the right way, but apparently some of these young chameleons don't know by instinct to lay in the bin.
