So, today I tried to take my 5month old panther cham out of his cage and bring him in the sun for a little bit. PFFFFTTTT. He basically told me NOT TODAY buddy. Hissing like a mad man, trying to bite my hand....I have never seen him this aggressive. I took him out and brought him in the sun yesterday as well and he did not seem to mind it one bit..

Any suggestions on making him calm down??
Or maybe just let him be today until he lets me take him out?? And try again in a couple of days or a week..??

But if he does not want to come out and play in the sun, by all means ill let the little guy stay in his home

sounds like your guy is growing up.

Most chameleons are aggressive, but once you get them out of their home the calm down a little bit.

For example i cannot take my male veiled out of his home unless i am wearing gloves, but once i get him out he settles down and i can take off the gloves.

hahahaha he bites the branch too!?

Yah im just guessing hes growing up, being a little punk ;)

And i have noticed that once I do have him out of his cage, that he is WAY MORE calm....I read that alot of it is just territorial.

And one more question...Seeing how it gets this aggressive, im guessing its stressing him out a lot...Should I let him win the battle and not take him out...Or should I not?? Even if it takes 5-10mins getting him out...?

that depends because if you spend 10 mins getting him out he will get more stressed and next time he will be even more agressive, if its fast then its ok because he will not be to stressed.

Sounds like his brother.

I decided today that Chameleo's new nickname is "The Fury".

It's nice seeing them grow up so fast, but I have pretty much come to terms that The Fury will always be full of rage and anger.

It really is half of what makes him awesome, but I definitely had to come to terms with it.

Lucky us though, we get to see their fired up colors a lot in the future as well as the present.

I worked a technique out for not getting bitten while handling him, but honestly, I just carry his whole cage out when he gets his sun every other day. He just doesn't like to be touched, at all. Just recently started tolerating my hand cleaning the cage without lunging for me.

I know carrying his whole cage out wont be feasable once he moves into his big unit.

Haha his brother is the same way??

Well I switched my gloves to the ones I was wearing yesterday and he was fine ><

Maybe he didnt like the color or something about the other gloves idk...?

Bummer, it's sort of weird how different they are from day to day. I feel like I keep seeing these mellow older chameleons though on youtube, etc. I'm hoping they mellow with age just like humans and most of the animal kingdom:D.
I have too much foliage to really get my hand in the cage without shaking stuff up so he already seems a little nervous with my hand alone

Hahaha, you use gloves? Chameleo is all lunge and no bite usually, but I have the feeling when he realizes how big he really is in a few months, the story will not be the same.

He is usually more chill after a warm mist and a full belly, and yeah, he calms down like yours after a few minutes outside of his "zone". Try moving reallllly slow, move one hand under and wave the other hand above him if he looks like he's going to bite. This usually works, keyword usually.

LOL Chris, my cham is the same. He just hisses and puts his mouth to my thumb, but won't bite me. I think he knows who I am. I'm not exactly sure if Veileds are as prone to stress as panthers, though, as I hold Fred once a week to keep him in check as to who his owner is. If you don't hold them regularly they get nasty, and bitey. My friend Sarah never holds her panther and when she had to take him to the vet, she was bitten pretty bad on the pinky while trying to transfer him from cage to carrier.

In my opinion, you need to show it who's boss. I know this might offend some, but if you try to bond with your cham, like drop in every so often and look in his cage, say hi. I swear they recognize voice. I have this "cutesy" tone I talk to with fred, and when he sees me approach his cage at first he freaks out, but when I start to speak in this tone he mellows out and starts to come to the cage's door, knowing i bring either water or food.

My husband had me on speaker phone once in our bedroom where Fred is kept. When he heard my voice he instantly jumped from his basking area to the front door of the cage expecting me to be there. Fred even loves it when we stroke UNDER his throat with a finger. He curls his tail in and stays still.

Expect them to hiss when they see your hand. That's what tends to happen with chams. Has your chameleon ever bit you yet? I've learned to show that you aren't afraid of them, and always approach with your hand from underneath, they appear less threatened that way. IF you haven't yet, try hand-feeding. Try to get your chameleon to associate you with food. Fred associates my husband with food, and me with water. :)

yeah even with them being pissy if you can get that hand under them, and pet their chin they mellow instantly. all i do is pet him and he unswells, and lets me hold him

Yah ive pet him under the chin, and thats how I always approach him his slow and under his chin...

And yes yesterday was his first day actually biting me...well the gloves, and I for sure felt it i can tell you that haha.

no more bites

ok guys this just mite help u out if ya cham is a biter, after i had to pay a vets a trip with my cham he showed me a way to handle the guys and never get bit...

What you need to do is get 1 hand and use finger and thumb and go to the back of the chams head, then use finger and thumb to grip just behind the jaw and use the rest of ya hand to lift cham up and turn upside down, u will find ya cham stays very carm then but if trys to bite he cant get u cus ur in full control of the mouth

hope this helps

You just described how to pick up a tokay gecko. I can see a few people disagreeing with this method. Approaching from behind and moving for its head might not appear to stress it out, but it might still. If your method works that's wonderful, but I would be cautious doing that and make sure you pay attention to your chameleons stress while handling. Most chameleon caregivers warn not to grab a cham from behind or from above.

Did he actually -bite- you, or just hiss at your and do that lunge thing?

He actually bit the glove haha... No doubt about it...If i didnt have my glove on, I would think it would of hurt for sure, i felt alot of pressure when he bit the glove
