Why

Exactly. Since panther chameleons are so popular and in high demand the they are able to price them higher than veileds and still sell plenty.

Yeah, panthers are the corvette of chameleons---sleek and flashy, whereas veileds are like pick up trucks. I think first time owners, especially, are drawn into the crazy colour schemes that panthers display and are willing to pay more.

I just wanted to say that this is a funny analogy.

So is a carpet like a mini? And a pygmy is like a moped? What about a parson's? Is that like a hummer?

Pygmies are way more fun than mopeds. They are like science fair hover boards or scooters :)

IMO Panthers are over rated. Don’t get me wrong I love all animals and ALL chameleons, they are my favorite animal BUT Veileds are never given the credit they deserve. They are highly intelligent, have tons of personalities, show great colors and are gorgeous chameleons. I have been around Panthers and Melleri for 8 years and IMO my Veileds are allot more entertaining and show so much more personality and they are just as beautiful.

Here's a couple of pictures of my "pick up trucks"

I think that every species of Chameleon has it's own special uniqueness. I was first drawn to the Panthers, but changed my mind and went with a veiled. I think that the colors of the blue blood lines and hi orange blood lines are beautiful. I wish I had room (and Money)for more Chameleons, I'd have one of every kind. But for right now I'm perfectly happy with my pick up truck:D

Those are gorgeous, Jannb. But I stilll like my "flashy" panthers.

But maybe I'll get one of those down the road. :D

Jannb! Your veileds are not the norm color wise. You just happen to have two of the most gorgeous veileds out there (you lucky dog!) AND you have ones with lots of personality! Pan gets so stressed out by everything that I feel bad about even being in the room with him sometimes... He's got true aggression and a leave-me-the-heck-alone personality. He's never been friendly, not even as a baby. He was always aggressive from day one! The only 'personality' Pan tends to show is stress and dislike.

Sometimes I wish I could just put him back in the wild where he wouldn't have to see people ever again. I love the "veiled" attitude, but not when everything that I do stresses out the poor animal...

I personally never liked the tall Veiled casque on males very much, it's just my personal preference. I like females for their much more petite casque, which is why I happily got a female and love to to death, but the males are not for me. I absolutely love the horns on Jackson's, but a lot of people don't, so it's all personal preference. And unfortunately, although veileds come in greens, yellows, and blues, I think a lot of people like the reds and such, so they go for panthers. Panthers are my personal favorites.

However, I do think that the difference in price is riddiculous. I don't think it's normal for a baby panther to sell for $200 and a veiled for $40, there just seems like too much gap. It's not like veileds are ugly, and they seem to be a highly popular first chameleon for most people that get into chameleons so I'm struck by why the demand is soooooo much less.

IMO veileds are very boring compared to the more colorful panthers i have both an there both ok veilds are just more plain.. also as for price i think veileds are to cheap..35 bucks?it does cost money to raise them....200 bucks for a panther 3 months old? it takes time raisin the babies and food lots of food..I think its a shame veileds are so cheap that is why pepole choose them as a first cham is cause they are cheap also cheap bescause how many of them there are, people just gettin into chams lets say are at a reptile show they want a cham but never had one what are they goin to get the 35 dollar veiled or the 200 dollar panther? its easy to sit ansay panthers should be cheaper until you have bred an raised a few clutches an see exactly what goes into raisin them for 3 or 4 months you will understand why they are more..

I have said for years that the prices on cb calyptratus are waaay to low. I like to breed my animals thats one of the reasons I was initially drawn to panthers after having a pair of veileds. You are going to lose money on a clutch of veileds unless you breed all your feeders yourself. Even then after raising a pair up for a yr and breeding them then waiting six months for incubation and 3 months for rearing. Your talking about 2 yrs time and prob over a grand invested. Hard to make a case for breeding veileds at what 35-50 bux apiece. At 200.00 each for a cb panther the breeder isnt making much wwhen you consider their investment and the man hrs involved in it. ;)

Veileds used to have value, I remember buying one as a kid (10-15 years ago) and I believe the retail sticker on him at the time was 129.99.
The problem was that they began getting over bred and the demand for them wasn't present so they bottomed out (still today they're extremely hard for most breeders to make a good amount from strictly breeder veileds).
It's happened in most markets though.
The Corn Snake market got the crap bred out of it, and again everything plummets to the ground.
I'm slightly shocked that the Ball Python market is managing to hold on as well as it is for as many new people getting into breeding (me included).
People are starting to sell Crested Geckos for 20$ a piece here, though their feeding requirements are different and extremely cheap compared to Chameleons, at 20$ is it even really worth breeding?

It's a vicious cycle that hits almost everything in the world, but that's what happens in a Capitalist society.
