Woke up to my baby dead :'(

Yes Carlton,I totally agree,I meant to say for her next chameleon purchase, looking into every angle, just in case is a different situations. But You are correct on this one with the unpredictable traumatic death and most likely not preventable.
So how often is this the case?

If there is no question to ask, I would rather leave the peaceful silence with my condolences in this sad event, due with my respect for Miss sydneymarie93 lost.:(

I think they are asking how often do chams just drop dead. I have owned them for over 27 years, and other than the baby Jackson's issue it only happened to me once. So I would say not that often

I hate that this has happened. I followed your posts and you really sincerely educated yourself in regards to chameleon care. This is obviously a rare incident as it had zero precursors. I wish I had the answer for you as to why this happened, but I think you should at least know that there were no visible symptoms or indicators that would have flagged this community to think that there was an issue that could have lead to death that quickly. So regardless of the outcome, I really think you did a good job at taking care of Leonidas in the best way possible. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Awful thing to have happen... I hope you're able to get an autopsy done and that they might find some reason for why the little guy died. I'm very sorry you had to go through this. It can't be an easy thing, especially having no answers.

I've put some time into reading your posts. Just saying that up front.

While I despise Petco selling animals, I can tell you the odds are it had nothing to do with them based on the time you had the animal and the that beautiful picture of him you posted.

I am not saying that to pick on you, quite the opposite. The biggest hurdle for any chameleon keeper is to learn what works, what doesn't, and also that sometimes despite everything being done right, **** happens with our wonderful animals, just like with people. While I would not recommend buying any reptile from Petco, you had a good one it looked like.

When chameleons are sick, they suck at hiding it. However like others have already posted, I would lean towards something fast, traumatic, that caused internal injuries. A bad fall for example. Poison? Anybody use raid or something like that nearby in the last day or two?

While these animals have a rep for crashing fast I learned over time that it was not so much as they crash fast but that people didn't know the signs of a health problem. Once those signs are so obvious anybody who has not even owned a chameleon can tell it has a problem there is usually no time left to save it. Hence the rep.

Very sorry for your loss. Don't give up. Instead figure it out, learn from it if you can, then continue with the hobby.

I woke up this morning about 6 am to turn his lights on. He was up and moving around I didn't think anything was wrong. I woke up 3 hours later to find him slumped over on his vine and all black. My hearts broken and my only guess would be he was already sick when I bought him from Petco. I've had him a month and a week and I have done everything right I feel. I came to this site and received so much good advice from established breeders. I'm just not understand this :'(

RIP King Leonidas

So sorry to read of your loss. Don't beat yourself up over it. BTW, my daughter's name is Sydney Maria

My thoughts are with you.

sorry for your loss..yeah all i can think of is poisioning maybe or a poisen spider..would be nice to figure to out..look at all possibilties..the food source as well.

r.i.p :( ... i went into a pet store last week and told the workers their chameleon dosent look good.. the humidity was at about 25% and i was told the gauge was broken and they ordered new ones and those came in broken too... so sad to see those chams not taken care of correctly in the store

I know that he was my first chameleon but I know not to use any chemicals(especially a pesticide) near or on his cage. I would think that was common sense with any animal? The only thing I would think that could even poison him is a ladybug. I read somewhere online that they are poisonous to chameleons don't know if that's true. But I can tell you I took all the advice people on this forum gave me and corrected the problems as soon as I was told. Which wasn't nothing more than him needing more perches. But I will definitely try to find what I can do better next time.

Thank y'all for the support and advice again. I think it might be awhile before I can invest my heart into another little guy.
