Wyoming Wonders

Hey all. I just thought I would share with you pictures from my last trip home in July. People think that just because I live in Chicago that I am a "city girl". I guess what they don't know won't hurt them, right? ;) I like to go back when I can because it's so peaceful there.

These pics are of my Dad's ranch of 1,200 acres located between Woods Landing, Wyo. and Centennial, Wyo. which is just a few miles north of the Colorado border west of Laramie, Wyo. The ranch is comprised of different homestead properties of families who came and settled there from Europe during the turn of the century. Most of this land was Native American hunting grounds around that time.

Beautiful pics. Bring back tons of memories.

I went to UW in Laramie and did fieldwork in that area and hunted down by Old Jelm along the N.Platte just down from your family property. That was back in the 1980s before I moved south to CO.

Next time you head out this way let us know maybe we can meet you for lunch in Laramie. ;)

Awesome! I knew you said at one point that you were from that area..... Did you see Jelm in the background in one of the pics?? Everyday the observatory shines so bright from the reflection of the sun - it's almost blinding! I will be sure to get in touch with you next time I'm home....:)

Nice pictures. That is a very pretty area. How many head of cattle does he have?

Thanks! I love it so much there and never pass up an opportunity to go back, even though sometimes it's just that they need another pair of hands to fix fence before the cows come out (during the winter months, the elk and moose tend to destroy sections of fencing) or for haying season.

There are about 120 give or take (including calves), however only a little less than half are ours. They are kept on our property from late May/early June to mid-Sept./early Oct. depending on the weather. The winters are pretty brutal out there so they are kept on someone else's property at a much lower elevation during the rest of the year.

Happy trails to youuuuu ....

Wow, Wow and WOW! How lucky you are to go back to that nice, gorgeous and quiet place. Does your dad need an assistant? :p (Sorry Chris but I would sell my soul, never to have to work in an office again! )

Have you checked out the Pioneer Woman blog? She lives on a million acres in WY too and writes about it.

I was born 150 years too late

Big Sky Country! Beautiful! :)

Um.... that's Montana (Laurie's neck of the woods).....but close! ;)

Yeah, Amy, me too. Yep - I've read it and there are some really good books out there re womens' diaries kept while taking different trails across the west during that time period.

You want a great read?? Get "The Daily Coyote - A Story of Love, Survival, and Trust in the Wilds of Wyoming" by Shreve Stockton (2008). It's a great story (true) and very moving.

Um, and the neck of the woods that you live in isn't too shabby either, missy..... :p I used to spend some time in the Seattle area growing up and loved it!

(P.S. My dad is always looking for good ranch hands....:D)

I love it! That's exactly where I want to be win I win the lottery :) I grew up around that kind of stuff. I didn't have anything near that large though. My great grandmother grew up on the King Ranch (not sure if you've heard of it, but it's one of the largest ranches in the nation) and my dad has a ranch that is pretty nice.

:) I realise you guys have these monica's for various places, but to me, anywhere the sky is not crowded with big buildings, skyscrapers, is 'big sky country' !
Over here its called 'the outback'.

One of my 'bucket list' items, is to spend time in the north American wilderness, the deserts, and wyoming and montana certainly make the cut! :)

Always wanted to live in a place like that, don't care much for the city :p.

That place is gorgeous!

Indeed! And the people who call Chicago the "Windy City" have obviously never been to Wyoming. It blows hard ALL the time.....

You are welcome to come visit any time....:)

WTF!?! Where are all the trees? LOL

It is truly awe inspiring there. And wow at the rolling hills. That place is the exact opposite of what I'm used to. Florida is flat and slap full of trees.

Your daughter is a cutie. Must take after her mother. ;)
