Yemen and mister?

Hi folks,

I'm getting my first Cham for Xmas, well I've got all the setup anyway, not getting my charm till the 6th of jan! :( anyway this gives me time to get everything right.. I have an Exo terra tank, vines and termite hill feeder,a little silk plants, but going to get some real ones too, I have the small Exo terra waterfall and the lucky reptile tree trunk dripper dripping onto a leaf then into the water fall, I have bark on the floor too.. This is my question and what I am unsure about.. It's humidity? As title states, I am getting a Yemen, I've been to different sites and some sites say that they live in hot dry climates and shouldn't have much humidity, other sites say they need to be humid and say insert a fogger/mister? So now I'm a little confused if my tank should be dry or moist? And should I use a fogger in my waterfall for his humidity?

Thanks in advance for any reply's... Really can't wait to get him, but I want everything to be perfect for him :)

Welcome! Merry CHristmas!
THere are a few things you need to change regarding your husbandry.
First- no waterfall, chams drink dripping water, not running water. A water fall can grow bacteria, your cham can drown, etc.
Second- No bark on the floor. If they eat this (and veields are known to eat lots of stuff) they can become impacted. bare floor please.
Third- Regarding Humidity- I keep my boy at 50-60 during the day, and when misting, it goes up to as much as 90%.

Please read this blog by Jannb on new keepers.

Chameleons are fantastic animals, but lack of info could cause problems, i speak from experience. There are a few knowledgeable people on the forums and are an asset to new owners. I have yesterday had my second cham, both veileds,(or Yemen) and i keep my humidity between 50 and 60%. I have a Misting machine,(although its a bit crap )and a ground fogger which comes on for half hour in the morn as a mornin mist.

Lol...I knew I should have used paper, the chap in the shop said use bark, but I had my doubts as I was worried about dust and bark getting in his eyes, he also recommend the waterfall Grrrrrr!! Lucky I brought the dripper then.

Have to mention about the waterfall, it only trickles water and there is no pool the water filters through a small rock base back into the the bottom where the filter is and pump is.

So I should keep my yemen moist then and not arid? And should I use a fogger or mister?

Thank you for the advice and merry Christmas :)

Newspaper, papertowels, nothing, or i used reptile carpet.
even thought it doesnt pool, it will still be on the floor right? well your cham wont spend most of his time down there, most o fit will be at the top, so misting up there onto the leaves is how he drinks.
I personally say get a mister, it will allow water to pool on the leaves for him to drink,
You want to make sure the cage is not overly humid,m as this can cause a respiratory infection.
and it should dry out at night.
do you have a uvb bulb and basking bulb yet?
if you take a picture of your set up, we can help you from there.

This is all I set up so far I still need to attach the tree trunk dripper, vines and real plants in (ficus) and a nice log, I also have the UV and basking light although now after reading that guide I'm wondering if I really need the basking lamp as he's only 2 months old, I'm going to have to test the temps with and without one.

Need to get rid of this bark though, think that reptile mat you mentioned is a good idea. :)

i would add things for him to climb on and up to, he needs to be able to get high enough to the bulbs to bask and stay warm but far enough not to get burned, if hes small craft store vines are perfect for his little toes to grip and more inexpensive then the vines at the pet store, real would be ideal, it keeps your humidity up too, plus some chams will nibble, so be sure to check to see if its a safe plant.

Don't worry I know it looks bare at the moment but I have plenty more to put in there for him lol, in fact he's going to be quite spoilt. Still also need to get a few more bits and bobs too.

Just out of curiosity my charm is going to be kept in my living room and there is a tv the other side of the room... Is this okay?

paper towels are no good. They get wet soggy and chams can ingest them just as easy as anything else that people are saying not to use. IF your concern about them injesting anything leave it bare and make a proper way to contain drain the water.

I thought you had screened cage drainage is a little trickier in terrarium. All though possible most do use substrates false bottom in those terrariums. If interested in how I do Pm me .
