so i was in petsmart just to browse and i always like to go see the lizards too see what they have and i see this sight -_-
juvenile veiled cham.

there is so many things wrong with this sight.
#1 the poor veiled is in a glass tank which is bad because he/she could get a respiratory infection.
#2 basically no hiding places.

#3 the water bowl, can carry bacteria.
#4 the air stone bubble thing, what do they think just because the water is moving he/she will drink out of it?
#5 the carpeting on the floor.
and
#6 the price, you will pay over 100$ for an animal who isnt properly taken care of? no. you can buy one around that age for around 30$.
#7 no highways for climbing!

bottom line. petsmart needs to get they're s*** straight!

without the water bowl would be alot better but i have seen alot worse, and the glass is not really that bad, a lil small and more foliage needed. as for the price it helps keep the reptile fesable, when they sell for a bit higher it keeps quality breeders making money and in the game. just a thought.

i was at my local PETCO the other day to pick up some suppliments and the girl there recommended this multivitamin from tetra Mainly because it had a picture of a vieled chameleon on it, couldnt tell me the difference between why one had D# and the other didnt have D3 aside because its what it says on the label. Plus she gave me attitude when i asked her anything that had to do with chameleons or cham care.

Oh I should take a picture of the ones at our Petco here...ugh I hate it! The ones in our petco got black spots all over them...what is this?

the glass isnt as bad because of the humidity, which is understandable.
but i doubt they know that haha

people dont like when you ask questions because they think you are trying to "offend" them

I actually went in there and told the kid at the register all the problems wrong with their setup and he said he would tell the manager. I doubt he did. Sad thing is. That's their second Veild some poor sap bought the last one.

im sorry you had a bad experience at Petsmart. i work for the company and i may not be able to speak for all of our stores i can say that mine is run with the animals needs first before the "company's policies" lol. I actually got started with chameleons at petsmart i change the setup quiet a bit and made a screen cage for our jacksons that we kept in a back room with great success, our jacksons bred in the enclosure and we had 8 babies. i would also use this enclosure to teach buyers how to keep the ones they buy. Now at my store we only order chameleons upon request to avoid long term housing in the unsuitable tanks.

Petco in my town- The Chams eyes are all closed!! an yup no running water.:(:(:( Wood chip type substrate. So sad! Petsmart doesn't have any chams currently TFG!

that actually looks nice compared to the last time i saw some at petsmart around here .. was like a 1'x1'x1' cage with one little fake plant thing hanging in the corner and a little bowl of water.
at least that has some bio vine things and some drift wood.. and a hydrometer still awful though.

Actually, better setup than some. The glass COULD (but not necessarily) create conditions that might bring on a URI. In a very dry air conditioned store it might be the better option if kept clean and there's some air exchange.

The air stone in the water bowl is certainly better than a plain bowl, assuming they change the water any time it gets a cricket or anything else in it. The airstone can create movement on the surface and sometimes it DOES attract the cham's attention so it will drink. I'm not saying I would do this.

Carpet is much safer than bark chips or soil.

I would be most concerned at the keeping information they provide to a customer. If their husbandry sources clue a buyer in to the optimum setup that should be used long term (instead of this very temporary one in the store) they are not being the worst.

I may be inexperienced but why does the basking temp go all the way to 105??? I thought at most they were supposed to hover from 88-92???

Oh no!! Whats "stress butt"? Is this something new I should be worried about?!?! :p

Yes! stress causes hormones to be released that are very unhealthy (in humans and animals), one side effect is wieght gain....

So yes you could get stress butt....

What's sad is that he/she looks to be in great condition compared to what my local PetsMart have. I was actually talking to an employee today who is saving for a chameleon. I told him I was getting one tomorrow. I also recommended this site and he's definitely going to check it out. He even acknowledged the fact that they don't do a great job at keeping them, and he tries to tell management but nothing gets put into play... It's sad really.
