so i was wondering if i should take off the clear plastic cover under the long florecent bulb i have another ficture that dosent have that plastic just wondering if it makes the light any less affective.

I wouldn't remove the plastic... I would remove the light fixture and find something else.

Stick to the ZooMed Reptisun lamps or the ExoTerra brand.

I would remove it. UVB does not penetrate and it does lower the transmission of light in general.

I'm not sure why Summoner is saying not to remove the plastic; unless he is simply being sarcastic in that these fixtures are very low quality (hard to tell on the internet :p). Back when I bought these fixtures, I recall mine actually coming with a sticker on it that said "Remove plastic lens if using with a UV bulb" or something similar. I would recommend getting your fixtures from Home Depot/Walmart/local lighting supplier and just throw in an appropriate reptisun 5.0 (and 6500K daylight bulbs if you need more light) and you are good to go....they are cheaper and higher quality

I am saying... don't bother removing the plastic, removing the fixture entirely is the best idea. they are not good lamps. No sarcasm. Simply, don't use a rzilla lamp. use the fixture (with no plastic) if you are using a ZooMed lamp or Exo Terra lamp.

So what type of fixture is best

The fixture might not be all that bad. It's just the rzilla lamp that come in the fixture. Is it a T8 fixture, or T5? If T5 you can get an Arcadia brand lamp, these are on par, if not better than the ZooMed T8 lamps. If its a T8, just find the ZooMed, ExoTerra or Arcadia lamps that fit the fixture.

If the fixture doesn't have a metal reflector, just put in some aluminum foil behind the lamp, this helps a LOT with UVB transmission.

Summoner12 is right at least on my experience. yes please i would say stick to zoomed or exoterra i have had bad experiences with rzilla they really bugged my chams eyes i had three rzilla lights and those 3 chameleons ended up in the vet because of eye problems. at least on my experience i WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THEM!!!!! (i used the 18 inch bulbs)

Here is the ultimate plan...;) Does your Zilla use T5 bulbs?? If so..... Toss the plastic shield... slap in a T5 54 watt High output ballast and Put in an Arcadia 6% high output bulb:cool:

How come?

I use the linear bulbs in my veileds a few years ago and the vet told me the light was being to strong and causing irritation on their eyes I'm not sure if they are still making the same ones but they might have improved them I haven't tried them in about 2 years.

sorry some are not up to date on zilla's T8's. No need to go spend more money...YOUR FIXTURE IS GOOD AND SO IS THE BULB. I would remove the plastic though. I personally use nothing but zilla t8's now. they out perform reptiglos hands down.
