I'm doing the same thing but I haven't trimmed the lower 1/4 because I'm trying to not have water get everywhere during misting time. As far as the humidity gauge, I have the accurite temp/humidity gauge purchased from Walmart for $12. Works great and has a high/Low function, though...

Let the hissers breed and feed appropriate sized nymphs. Also they are really soft right after they molt, but once they harden up their exoskeleton is pretty hard compared to the typical feeder roaches.
