Goo call on the Acrylic... but again is more expensive as you stated.
I am using a method that the store i go to use for their dart frogs.... waterfall will not be on 24/7 hopefully allowing the soil to dry out inbetween. If it does not I will deal with it then... I will know within the first...
The 12 inches will ultimately depend on what temps you get at the basking spot.
If you are asking if 12 inches is enough room for the heat to escape then, I would say yes. I would add some hole to the top as well as heat normally rises.
Define best cage.
I will admit I am a exo terra fanboy other than their flouscent fixtures and bulbs. They make excellent screen and glass cages.
They make the largest 36Wx36Tx18D that I can find which would be perfect for a veiled or panther. But almost double the cost.
Aside from heat( I am assuming you already have this) the reptisun 5.0 should be perfect. Assuming you have lots of foliage for the chameleon to hide under.
Pros and cons of glass
Pros
1. Retain heat. This is awesome for where I am up in Canada.
2. Retain humidity. Again this is awesome as it is dry in Canada in winter
3. Clear view of the chameleon.
4. Vents T the bottom of the fron face to allow airflow.
Cons
1. Heat. Too much heat is...
Again these are my experiences and am hopefully explaining why I choose what I choose.
By all means people have made terrariums out of wood.... I would not risk it personally.
People have made terrariums out of acrylic (plexiglass) all the time. The other thing to remember is that plexi...
I have not made a terrarium for plexi glass but made cases for other things.
The downside to plexi glass are:
1. Expensive, At Home Depot in Canada a 3' long by foot tall sheet is $120. So for a 12x12x36 cage you need 5 sheets. That's over $600.... Stupid to me... I did call a glass...
I would not use wood. To many chemicals and unknowns. If water soaks into the wood you could end up with black mold.... VERY BAD stuff.
Use the egg crate now that you have it. Use the Saran Wrap idea. This will make it still removable. If you decide later it's not strong enough then add some...
My suggestion although I have not done it, would be too...
Soak wood in vinegar - killing everything, however since you would then have to soak in water and allow to dry multiple times while it would work I would not use.
Simplistic solution would be to simply boil the wood and allow to dry...
The more ideas, thoughts, questions the better. This is meant to inspire other to come up with ideas i haven't that I can use for future projects and for others. That is why I made this thread. Not only to show people but also to get them to ask questions like yourself. I am very confident I...
I thought heavily about that and opted out of it for a few reasons.
1. I am using the foam to help support the cork, the branches and a bunch of other things.
2. Crickets can get into any small crack. I hate it. So I decided no to have that.
3. Water. I did not want stagnate water anywhere...
I am planning to test the terrarium for a full week with 2-3 water changes before a chameleon enters the cage to watch for humidity and temperature.
As for the ledges. I realized that after it was too late. I am hoping that placing the heat lamp in the middle of the cage will prevent the heat...
I then used a second can of foam to make the water go where I want it to go..Once it has dried for 24 hours you can then cut and carve the foam to the shape you want. However the foam underneath is no longer sealed. So once cut you will either have to foam over it and use you hand with a glove...
To create the waterfall I used a second can of foam once the bottom layer dried. I then also used some silicone to place some branches in place.
I used 1x Exo terra grape vine

I also used 1x Exo terra Jungle vine...
