    No power after Sandy!

I would suggest heat packs, too. If it gets REALLY cold, and your cham doesn't mind being handled, you might warm it with your body heat... my friend doesn't have power, and they have baby tortoises... she stuck them under her shirt onto her warm belly! Haha, gives "kangaroo care" a whole new...

heat bulb went out.. what to do?

Heat bulbs will last (according to the manufacturer) for about 2000 burn hours. I've found that they usually burn out after about 3-4 months, they do better in a new fixture. The good ceramic fixtures with the metal dome are cheap at the feed store (in the baby chicks area), so if my bulbs start...

Cham's reaction to clothes I wear

Has anyone else noticed their chameleon have very distinct reactions to what clothes (or more specifically, color) you wear?! Our Leonard turned all dark brown and puffed up/turned flat and hissed when I walked by his cage. He normally never does this, he gets hand-fed every day (see my other...

Veiled Cham having surgery this Wednesday...

Hi @MollyT - Thank you for your kind words. :) Leonard is a "permanent foster placement" which means that he still "belongs" to the rescue organization (so they can still use him in educational events e.g.), BUT he will live with us for the rest of his (hopefully long) life. :) He is a sweetie...

Veiled Cham having surgery this Wednesday...

Hi @DavidBuchan, haha, my husband and I LOVE 'The Big Bang Theory' - but Leonard came to us pre-named. :) We just got back from the vet. She used a specialized syringe needle (it has a rounded tip, normally is used for feeding tiny birds!) to flush out Leonard's eye with saline. He hid his eye...

    Chameleon art

I thought you guys might like to see the 4 little Veiled Chameleon paintings I created a while back. :) They were a lot of fun to illustrate. ~Katie

Veiled Cham having surgery this Wednesday...

Thanks @DavidBuchan, for your message, and for the caresheet link - I had actually already discovered that one while I was refreshing my memory on how to properly care for a Veiled chameleon... years ago we had a female. We knew before we started fostering Leonard that he has a lot of special...

Veiled Cham having surgery this Wednesday...

UPDATE: still some swelling in Leonard's eye It has been several weeks now since Leonard's surgery to remove the abscessed bump on his nose ridge. He is done receiving antibiotics. The sutures on his nose ridge look great - I bet they will fall off with the next shed. However, there appears...

Area By Area (& country) Vet list

Great Reptile vet in Vancouver, WA I had a very positive experience with a reptile vet these past two weeks. Dr. Flaminio at East Mill Plain Animal Hospital (although I am also told that the other vets there have a lot of know-how with reptiles) really knows her stuff. She did some surgery...

    Force Feeding

Good luck! And just for the record, I don't recommend the papaya juice long term, or as a substitute to good misting and another water source (e.g. drip). But for the in-between time where extra liquid is essential, it's awesome. It has literally saved our Leonard's life.

    Issues with Cham's Tongue

Our chameleon, Leonard, has the same problem, likely due to calcium/vit B deficiency before we got him (he's a rescue, and already had the problem when he was in the rescue facility) - we have to hand-feed him by pulling his gullet/throat flap down, and popping the worms/crickets into his mouth...

How much do you pay for the vet?

Our vet had a printable coupon for a free first office visit, so I "just" had to pay for antibiotics. Normally the office visit would be $55 for a reptile. There is another reputable reptile vet near us that charges $65 for the office visit. I would take any Yelp-reviews with a grain of salt -...

    Force Feeding

Jasper is lucky to have an owner who is taking good care of him! We have a rescued full-grown male Veiled chameleon, and I've had to feed him by hand since day 1 because he doesn't hunt due to calcium deficiency. He is getting stronger all the time, but still doesn't hunt (at least he climbs...

Veiled Cham having surgery this Wednesday...

@kinyonga -Good question, and YES! :) I've been giving Leonard antibiotic injections (the vet showed me exactly how) for a week before the surgery (every 72 hours) and will continue until a week after. A culture is being done, just to be sure that the bacteria are actually sensitive to the...

Veiled Cham having surgery this Wednesday...

@Hoj, no, I wasn't in the room, but one of the technicians took 20+ pics for me, and the vet gave me a very detailed description of what was done. So a vet technician is the one holding Leonard during the surgery. :)

Veiled Cham having surgery this Wednesday...

Surgery UPDATE Veiled Chameleon nose ridge abscess Leonard had his surgery today to remove the abscess on the ridge of his nose. Everything went really well, Leonard is happily resting on his favorite branch. The vet said that it was good that we got it now, there was granulated puss all...

Veiled Cham having surgery this Wednesday...

Hi all, I just joined this forum, but have read quite a few posts on here in the past weeks. We are currently fostering Leonard, a fully-grown male veiled chameleon (age unknown) that has some pretty major health problems. Slowly but surely we are addressing each one, and he is already...
