Well, I am not yet an EXPERT when it comes to veileds (I have only had a female for just over a year and a male for a couple of weeks now) but she actually looks like a he! The colours look more male (nothing like Yuki at all, either relaxed, basking, stressed or angry). Nice picture of his back...
If the crickets are being gutloaded, I don't see why misting the crickets would provide extra benefit? I'm sure the crickets are already orange flavoured when they pop in the cham's mouth. :D
Whenever a cricket gets mist water on it and ends up being wet, the chams tongue tends to not stick...
I also use branches from outside in the forest near our house. I surely wash and scrub off any really loose bark, but do not peel it off (this is to prevent it from getting in anyone's eyes as chams to rub while shedding). I find the sticks preserve better with the bark left on and also find...
The black of the fixture on the left might also be absorbing light rather than reflecting it as the white one would. Either way, it's the fixture and not the bulb :)
In my smallest Veiled vivarium I use bamboo sticks and pothos vines for climbing.
In my ellioti viv I use one long fake vine from I believe exoterra, pothos vines, sticks I found outside and a nice bushy umbrella plant.
With my largest veiled I use a fully grown ficus tree that has thickish...
Yep, I understand that ellioti's can live together, else I wouldn't have considered it :) (Ryuu and Yuki won't ever live together). I just have to be sure to keep an eye on them both and get a new, larger vivarium at some point! I think 60x60x120 cm would be too big for them though... so I think...
The enclosure looks like it would be really nice for him.
I also agree that removing a side or two would raise airflow and allow a quicker drop in humidity, rather than keeping all that humid, stagnant air in the enclosure with him. One side should theoretically be enough, but it all depends...
Shedding in a new environment isn't strange at all, but it can cause him to lose his appetite! I think that's all they were trying to say. Both are factors that might cause a cham to stop eating temporarily, and both together must really be uncomfortable to the little guy!
As the others have...
The setup looks lovely and I cannot find anything to complain about :)
As everyone says, yes it is normal for him to be scared of you. Right now, you're kind of like a giant that MIGHT eat him, so he'll hide. Once he recognizes you as not being a threat, he will no longer hide. This usually...
I'll cross my fingers for you!
As for the original question regarding the watermelon... I don't think watermelon itself is very nutritious in general. I doubt it's toxic though :)
Alright, good to have another opinion :D
So far I am happy with their interactions together (they're living in the same viv). They have branches next to one another to sleep on and the "worst" thing that happened was Midori once using Marimo's tail as a vine. He looked at her, kinda glaringly...
Just a little suggestion that might help with feeding fruits and veggies (Maybe you're doing it, maybe not, can't hurt to help, right? :D)
Yuki will NOT touch fruits or veggies if I just put them in her viv. She will eat them though, I just have to do something clever about it. I take a small...
I would recommend some more horizontal branches and whatnot so has more room to roam or you risk her climbing the screen, which is not good for the claws if done too much!
Once you get the live plants put in, post some more pictures :) Also, be sure to cover up the plan soil with river stones...
I can only offer possibilities:
Is he getting ready for a shed perhaps?
Maybe he is not hungry?
Chameleons do not eat every day in the wild, so I wouldn't be TOO worried about him not eating, unless it goes on for a long period of time. As long as he doesn't look sink or like he's losing...
I'm no vet, so I am not going to pretend I know what is certainly a problem, but I will address some things that might help those who can better diagnose the problem than I.
Do you happen to have any pictures? A visual aid of the setup and of your sick guy will help a lot in determining the...
Yes we have decided that Marimo is male (I can clearly see his man-part-bundle), but here is one of my topics with the best pictures of him when he was young: https://www.chameleonforums.com/marimo-ellioti-98921/
I suppose looking back, I can really notice the difference. Marimo was REALLY...
In my experience they can go without eating for a couple of days. It all boils down to a few factors as to why they are not eating:
New environment. Suggestion: Wait until he settles down, try new feeders, he should start eating soon!
Shedding. He might just be about to shed, does he look...
It depends on the fixture and bulbs. The packaging should have an optimal distance from the animal, but usually sitting on top top the viv is best. This is most natural as the sun usually shines overhead through the canopy of the trees :) If you have the light shining at an angle through the...
My ellioti vivarium does not have any drainage as it's glass and things work out well. I have some very absorbent substrate which holds a lot of water without molding. One thing you do have to keep in mind is not to spray too long. You want to cover the leaves for them to drink, but not so much...
They're about to go to sleep right now, so I'll try and get some pictures of them tomorrow!
You can even come back after his next shed with more pictures, maybe he will have more colour then :D
