You won't regret it!
I live in Florida so my "Florida room" stays fairly warm so I just put them in there, but you could get a little heating pad from any reptile pet store section. And as far as food I give them a commercial diet sometimes (something like Repashy Superload or Dinofuel, etc.)...
Yes, that's a very beautiful female but a female nonetheless. If she were male at this size you would definitely be able to see a bulge and more masculine colors, but the narrow tail and the bright peach tells me you have a female.
Yes, that's why I don't have any outlets or extension cords (or anything like that) right behind a cage without a barrier or within any possible "splash zone." For example, in my last set-up I had the cords running behind the cages about half-way up, but since I had an acrylic background between...
They're the same animal, they are technically Usambara Giant Three-horned Chameleon (Trioceros deremensis)
The horn thing I don't know, actually. I would search the forum for threads or google a species profile.
Chameleons, regardless of how intelligent you think they are or are not, definitely respond to operant conditioning like nearly all living things - that's why usually hand feeding works so well! You reward a behavior with something like food and they are more likely to engage in that behavior...
Keep an eye out on the forum because people are working with eggs every so often but the problem seems to be raising them up. I've been in the market as well and in the past 8-9 months there have been 2-3 clutches that I've been aware of (CB/CH) and they either crashed within a couple weeks of...
I'm in Miami (so not the same, I know) but I've had all three melleri outside for months now, since about Feb/March, and they've all been doing super well outside. Especially my newest WC, who I purchased the previous October, has been doing so much better outside than he ever was indoors. His...
It's probably a Cuban false chameleon (Chamaeleolis barbatus), from the relatively short tail and the anole feet, so that would be my guess.
They are anoles and not true chameleons :)
I had my last WC melleri tested when I first got him in October and he tested positive for trichomonas, giardia, and roundworms. I was told he spent a month with the importer. It was nothing that a round of Panacur didn't clear up.
Too much D3 actually can cause MBD because too much will impede the proper absorption of calcium (hense causing the calcium deficiency) which will mimic the symptoms of too little calcium in the diet. A little is totally necessary to absorb calcium, but too much will actually hurt the process...
Jeremy, what do you read when I write? I haven't "knocked" anyone or discouraged anyone at all, so I don't know why you think I'm writing with animosity towards people who do breed beyond panthers and veileds. I just said the numbers were small relative to the number of people who decide to...
That's fine, but that's my opinion regarding the original question as to why there are so many imported chameleons in general. I never made the distinction between rare or not rare (although, even the non-rare still have crap breeding success in the States. Which is why they are so heavily...
I never said we shouldn't get them anymore because they are difficult to breed sustainably (I have a balcony full of WC melleri and plan on getting more) but that it's a big reason why we still have to import them in. Getting them is relatively easy, it's the keeping them going here once they...
How old is Ender? I doubt it though, I'd feel comfortable leaving mine outside in 65F, when it's lower than about 60F I usually bring young chameleons inside. But 65 is a good temp, that's a nice temperature drop at night which is good for them.
Congrats for taking him on!
It's a tricky situation because with MBD there are a couple extra issues to keep in mind. 1, that his jaws are probably not very strong so you want to be extra careful not to force his mouth open and to use the gentlest method possible so you don't accidentally crack...
I think you can leave him outside however long you want, so long as the temps and such are appropriate for him. If he has lots of shade and even a misting system hooked up he can probably be outside all day long, even during the hottest parts of the day. And I keep mine outside when it rains as...
I answered anyway just because you never know who else is reading, not so much for the sake of the poster. I don't want newer keepers to go, "oh, well that sounds convenient! I'm going to dump out my live, stinky crickets and just buy canned ones instead!" so I reply for their sake at the very...
