Alright, as of 1:00 PM today, I have my little laying bin set up with a heat lamp, a little bit of bamboo to maybe make her feel more at home, cardboard set up around the laying bin's edges, and a mirror placed so that I can see her without her seeing me. Let's hope it works!
This is my first time owning a chameleon. It's a female veiled, 6 or so months old. We purchased a 2ftx2ftx3ft cage for her before doing enough research (I know, stupid), but I think this size should be okay for her. We've owned her for a little under two months now. Does this seem like an...
There is a pretty cool store for exotic pets in Oakland, the East Bay Vivarium. I bought a tortoise from them a while ago, but that was when I was a kid so I do not know if they are great at taking care of their pets. Wide selection of reptiles, fish, arthropods, amphibians, etc, though.
That's a fantastic idea! I will try that later tonight. She certainly looks big enough to lay, and the added weight seems to be making her cumbersome by this point.
Thanks for the advice, this is really helping. I guess I am still curious, though, how long do veiled chameleons gestate for? I am mostly concerned because if she was impregnated at the pet store when she was little then her eggs have been gestating for at least 1.5 months, and she hasn't been...
The thing is, there aren't really various breeds of veiled chameleons like there are with panthers. Panther chameleons as a species are spread out over a number of small islands, which is why they're varied like they are. Veiled chameleons live in Yemen, so there is not nearly as much variation...
Yep, too much calcium. Are you using calcium with or without D3? This happened to my chameleon when I was mistakenly dusting her food with calcium with D3.
On that, I'm really not sure. I think they become fertile at about five months, but I dunno when they start cycling infertile eggs. Of course, there is a certain way you can raise them that surpresses egg cycles. Think it has something to do with lowering temperatures and feeding her less. This...
Thanks for the links. What are the benefits of liquid calcium over calcium dust?
Also, do you think she might have just started her infertile cycle at this age, or is it very likely that she was impregnated?
And finally, if they are indeed fertile, should I bother with trying to raise them? We...
I am owning a chameleon for the first time and I bought a female who was about 5 months old. I have owned her for a month and a half, and she is now heavily gravid. I have asked about the community, and determined that she had not been impregnated when I bought her. She was kept in a tiny...
Your feeding is pretty similar to mine. I feed my six month old female veiled 6 crickets a day and usually a few small waxworms dusted with calcium. Beautiful chameleon, by the way.
I use a space heater to keep ambient temps at 70 degrees, but my impression was that you needed a temp gradient from about 70 to 80.
Also, I have an analog thermometer like this one: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/images/Categoryimages/normal/p_231638.jpg
Also, I just tested the 100W one, got the...
So everyone says that a 60W house bulb should be used to heat a chameleon's enclosure, and I have been doing this for the past few weeks. It doesn't seem like this is hot enough, though! My chameleon spends her basking time within an inch of the roof of the enclosure. At the very top it's only...
