    Babies, Babies, Babies

So I have been waiting forever and finally have my babies! They are ambilobe and incubated for a little over 7 months, over the past week 38/41 hatched and the other three eggs look like they are still good. They are in 4 different rubbermaid containers right now and are looking great. It...

Where my taxonomists at? In need of clarification

Thanks for the info, I think the Vitt and Caldwell book is great for most families, but the Chameleon taxonomy was definitely a mess. In addition to the subfamilies that were not monophyletic it seems to me that several of the genera are simply "junk drawers" where species with unknown...

Where my taxonomists at? In need of clarification

I will be presenting a lecture on the family Chameleonidae for a herpetology class at UGA in few weeks and I want to make sure I have my taxonomy correct. In most older books and papers I have found the family Chameleonidae divided into two subfamilies: Subfamily - Brookesiinae – Dwarf...

cup feeding, free roam feeders, hand feeding

I find that when any cham is offered a different species of prey other than their staple, it really piques their interest. There have even been several studies on prey preference switches - it may be one mechanism by which chams can ensure they are getting proper nutrition. So, if you have a...

    wwYd

It is always scary to go away for a while... but I try to set up most of my cages where everything is on timers... That way your chams can get the proper lighting and misting while you are gone. Water and light are the most important - they (healthy adults) can make it a while with out food...

    This is Brutal!

You would think after you check your eggs daily for like 30 days in a row you would eventually not be dissapointed when they haven't hatched yet....but rest assured, the day will come

Money Saving Tip on Water Crystals!!!

Same here, I have been using this stuff for several years. I use it to feed my cricket and roaches - one bag will last a looooooong time.

    Turkistan roach (blatta lateralis)

The turks will breed better for you if you keep them really hot and humidity! Once you update the humidity they will practically grow while you are watching them!

Superpig, Naturose, Paprika - Do they work?

Hmm, haven't tried it on my darts yet - but I do occasionally sprinkle some of the superpig on my chams food. I just like to see empirical evidence that something is really working!

Superpig, Naturose, Paprika - Do they work?

Several of these "color brightners" have been on the market for some time, I was curious to see how many people have tried them on chams. My guess would be that a well-rounded diet & good lighting would yield the brightest cham colors. Anyone who has tried them have any good before and...

    temperature control

Good answers, watch where your cham spends most of its time... more time under the basking light than normal may mean its a little cool.

    Which Roach is better???

Roaches definitely don't smell like crickets that is for sure! The only word of warning - even if you use tongs for your roaches you will drop one at some point!!! Then you will have to squash it quickly or you won't sleep well at night (or in my case, my wife won't sleep well at night)

    A few of my herps...

Thanks for the comments! Even though the venemous snakes are a little scary I think they are the some of North America's coolest looking snakes. I have to say that I am a big fan of the larger dart frog species. If you have the dedication and patience to take care of a chameleon, large...

    A few of my herps...

Just thought I would post a few photos. The ambilobe is about 11-12 months, can't decide if those blue bars are going to come out more or not. The female is checking out her studly man in the background! They aren't normally together, he was just getting a little loving and then going back to...

    Dog and a Chameleon

I have a shelty and his kennel is in the same room as the chams. The dog tries to attack any small animals that move, so I have the cham cages at least four feet off the ground and the dog never notices the chams. The chams, however, always notice the dog. My male ambilobe doesn't get...

    College and Chams?

During my time in the dorm (that had a strick no pet policy) I kept and successfully bred many animals including .... giant day geckos, azureus, auratus, spearpoint leaftail geckos, crested geckos, columbian tegus, red-tail boa, honduran milksnakes, MANY salamanders, and a huge colony of...

    Best screen to use?

I just build two cages one with black aluminum screen and the other with fiberglass (kind of by accident). The fiberglass screen is nice because it is softer and doesn't bend, but I have had crickets chew through fiberglass screen within a matter of hours. It also provides a little more...
