Get a stronger basking bulb, I was having the same problem but make sure they can't burn themselves on it.
Also, covering the sides won't do much for the temperature. Make sure you also have a good night time bulb so the temp doesn't drop too much.
I'm really not too sure. I think it has to do with how grouchy she is opposed to the baby. He wasn't able to hold her and she would always try biting him. Plus, I don't think he wants to deal with the eggs because he actually has to do something about it or she can become egg bound. Or it might...

Nah, he makes me laugh too at how ignorant he can be, I could go on for days about how this guy should not own any animals. Unless you were laughing at me, but I guess I just try to make sure my pets and other animals have the best possible care.
