I've been having trouble getting my veiled to eat for months. Only wants hornworms and grapes. In December I drove an hour + to the resident vet expert (hello ferretinmyshoes if you're reading!) who treated him for pinworms and suggested bumping up the basking temperature even if Grog gapes...
Thanks for the reply. I figured there had to be a reason not to mix everything together. Would make life a little easier but oh well- chameleons just aren't easy!
So, given the recommended supplement schedule, is there any reason not mix up a daily supplement consisting of 12 parts plain calcium, 1 part calcium with D3 and 1 part multivitamin? Does having the D3 and multivitamin so diluted fail to reach a threshold or something?
Now that my cham is...
Really interesting and helpful info. Thanks so much. I have definitely thought more about vertical zones. I'm going to try to pay more attention to whether Grog moves horizontally during the day. Though either way, he still gapes quite a bit and it's also helpful to hear this isn't necessarily...
Thanks so much for the feedback. Lathis. Grog seems equally hesitant to leave his chosen sunning spot indoors and out.
My family members think I'm a bit indulgent with the little guy so I thought maybe worrying about his basking temp all day could be another instance. But I guess I get to...
Wherever my guy is-- in the cage, free roaming on his ficus or on the screened patio-- he always seems to choose a favorite basking spot and just hangs there, even when it gets hot and he starts gaping.
If he's in his cage, I turn down the basking light (I keep the temp between 85 and 90--...
Thanks so much for the feedback. Very helpful (as always!). I guess it's back to Home Depot for one more try.
And the idea of switching the basking light off for a couple of hours midday is great, though I guess I'll need separate timers for the two lights now.
So a fluorescent light works with a power strip timer but not a dial timer? Seems to go against what the Home Depot guy said about fluorescent starters but experience tells. Thanks!
I'm trying to get as much automated as possible for the ease of my petsitter. I'm hoping some experts can help with two questions.
First, I see people post basking temps as if they are constant. Is this so? I have the thermostat in the room where my veiled cham resides set for 62 at night and...
Just got some butterworms and my picky veiled Grog loves them! But the ones I received are smaller than some I have seen. Question: Is there a way to get them to grow after receiving them given that I have no Tebo Trees in my yard?
Ha! Grog would do a happy dance if I ended up short of dubia! Maybe I'll try posting about the colony again but not sure about shipping. Yuk. I guess I share Grog's distaste for roaches.
Super! You are always so helpful, sandrachameleon. I have reduced the temp and food and will plan on...
Thanks for the reply. I tried to find local forum members in need of roaches but my thread was removed. I also advertised on craigslist but no takers. So far my only option is a pet store that will pay by the pound, which I'll probably do as I just don't need or want all these roaches.
Is...
I'm so excited!! My picky veiled ate TWO dubia today. TWO!! Just when I was ready to get rid of my ever-expanding colony.
But I have a question...how small can a colony be?
I have many hundreds of roaches in a big (18 gallon?) tupperware. Can I just pick out a few large females and a...
I've been scoping out mulberry trees! I got a little scared off silkies when the batch I ordered arrived as a huge stinky brown goo-- the virus, I guess. Good to know you've had luck. I'll try again next order.
My guy likes carrots, sweet potato and red peppers so I mostly gutload with...
Thanks so much for the input
Alas we have a thriving and ever-growing dubia colony and Grog HATES roaches. If I starve him he'll maybe eat ONE and has had about 3 total in 4 months. We're trying to sell the colony. Maybe I'll try raising hornworms next as I know he loves those. I ordered...
I know it is good to feed a variety of foods but I just have one cham-- and a very picky eater at that. If I order a special food online (Grog LOVES hornworms), I want him to eat them up before they get too big or die. So for a few weeks he'll get a delicacy every other day rotated with an...
I have read tons of posts about hunger strikes and I am a little reassured that my 7ish-month old veiled won't wither away. For about a week or two Grog has turned up his nose at dubia (nothing new-- the colony grows and grows), crickets (used to be his main food source), as well as superworms...
