Prayers!!

We went to a chameleon vet today about Espio's hyperextended tongue, or what I thought was a hyperextended tongue. I hadn't seen his tongue in a few days, and when the vet looked into his mouth his tongue didn't fall out. His tongue did look swollen though. The vet said he looked great, no shaky limbs and clear eyes. He decided to run some blood work to make sure there wasn't anything hidden. It turns out Espio has a major infection. His body has been fighting it off but has started producing so many white blood cells that they've turned toxic. He's having me continue the Batryl, and then he gave me an injectable antibiotic. He said he isn't fond of giving chameleon's injections because he said it could cause permanent discoloration at the injection site, but he thought it was the only way to get enough antibiotics into his system to give him a chance.

He said it's up in the air as to whether or not he will make it though. :( I'm so scared! We go back in in a week to do another blood test and see how he's doing. Please send your thoughts and prayers our way. I don't want to lose my little boy.

Glad you found out what it is that's wrong. Hope the meds will clear it up. Did your vet suggest to vary the infection site? Where do you have to give the injections (arms)?

Did he say how or why to feed him until the tongue heals?

Jen- Thank you!

Kinyonga- He did tell me to vary the injection sites. He recommended legs or any place with muscle. We are having to almost force feed him. I wrap him up in a towel so he can't hurt himself and the vet showed me how to get him to open his mouth. I stick a worm just in the front part of his mouth and he chomps down on it. We are hoping the antibiotics will kick in soon so he can regain the use of his tongue and eat on his own. Until then though the vet said it was important to help him eat so he keeps his strength up to try and fight this off. :(
