4 week old veiled chameleon acting weird.

Since I have just left his heat lamp off and keeping the cage at about 80F the chameleon has been a lot better. He is now up in the trees and enjoying his yummy crickets I got him today. It was really cool watching him eat today and prowl his prey ever so calculated and slowly. Thanks for all the help. I was also able to get that heat gun and Ill be sure to cover up his tank with a towel. As for the cage I talked to a friend of mine who is keeping a couple veileds and panthers. Told me just to keep what I have since ill be upgrading the cage here in a about 2-3month. <3 this community, im sure Ill be back if I ever run into any issues.

Only things I'll recommend right now are reading over these care resources especially the section under "Caresheets" about veileds:

https://www.chameleonforums.com/care/chameleons/

Also I'd recommend getting some Calcium Without D3. Not positive of the percentages in exo-terra brand but most people supplement calcium w/D3 twice a month and multivitamin twice a month (these being spread out over the month, like as an example, switching off on sundays) and calcium w/o D3 all other feedings.

As far as their sex goes..look at the back of his back feet. Is there almost a third toe there? Or "spur"? If so it's male. Females lack these. I believe you can still use this method at this age, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I agree with what all the other members say in regards to the substrate and water bowl. Not a good idea. Water bowl is totally unnecessary and can only potentially get your cham sick. Substrate can cause him to be impacted as well as getting in the eyes as other members have stated.

As far as your cage goes, I'm not sure that you need to have an all screen setup. With that said, I personally use all screen, but I know many breeders and very experienced chameleon owners who use glass/screen vivarium type setups with great success. Your type of cage can be very helpful in providing high humidity. But with the glass, it will trap heat more than a screen cage and also will heat up very easily with when using a heat lamp or if exposed to sunlight. And you've already seen the negative effects of too much heat and not providing a drop in temperature at night so he can sleep. I'm sure some people will totally disagree with me, but this is just MHO. Good luck to you and your little guy.
