I suggest using an incandescent house bulb of appropriate wattage for the species of chameleon.

Im with Pssh. During the day you want the heat to shine down from a light, like the sun. You want a nice warm basking spot, and a temperature gradient cooling as the chameleon moves downwards in the cage. You do not want a heat matt or heat coming up from the ground - chameleons are not ground lizards. At night, you dont want a light at all and it would be best if the room was kept at an appropriate temp.

Adult Male Veiled/Chamaeleo:
day basking spot 96.5F/36C
day cooler spot / ambient range 70-80F/21 -26C
night to a low of 60F/15.5C

Adult Panther/Fucifer:
day basking spot up to 90F/32C
day cooler spot / ambient range 70-80F /21 -26C
night to a low of 65F/18C

young veiled or panther
day basking spot up to 81F/27C
day cooler spot / ambient range 70-75F /21 -23C
night to a low of 68F/20C

other species have different needs.
