Adopted Veiled - first timer

Do you know how to give subq fluids to chams? or exotics in general? If you do I would strongly recommend putting some of your skills to use and helping him a long quicker with his fluids. Toweling him would likely help with stopping him from biting you and causing unecessary damage to you. I have done fluids for some of our easier to do reptiles and smaller mammals and I have no skills other than I am aware what needs to be done due to all the rehabs I do. I have saline I buy from my vet and insuline syringes I use. Generally chams are ones I go to vet for because they are more of a pain, but you have some skills so maybe you can figure it out?

And honestly I would take a grumpy and willing to bite cham to one who is lethargic and listless any day. At least he is still feeling good enough to show his displeasure <3

Nice. I'll probably order that and modify it as needed. I don't think I would save that much money making the cage... I more wanted to build one for the enjoyment, and extra customization, but I also want to make sure he doesn't have to wait too long. Shipping from there isn't until 5-7 days though. So I'll decide this weekend.

I know how with dogs and cats but not chameleons... I could probably do it'd I knew which part of the body works for them, but not without someone to restrain him. I would bring him to work but our vet that works with reptiles more often is out of town. Another vet may be able to help me. Hmmm.

Let him get more stabilized before bringing him in, for sure. If you could do it on your own then I would suggest doing it because then you could do it at home. So depending on how long your exotic vet is out of town I would recommend waiting of course and letting him settle a bit more.

The bottom is removable and not sure where you are located but I had the tank in 3 days and I live in northern MN. When I purchased it was $100 with a sitewide 30% off. Now it appears like it might be on clearance or something. Either way I doubt the price or stock will last long at that price.

Is sq fluids usually a one or two person job? The main thing will just be having another pair of hands if that is needed.

Yeah, getting one before they go out of stock is another thing I have to consider. Decisions, decisions.

You need to be sure you know what you're doing when you give fluids subq to a chameleon...its easy to hit the lung or anorgan and that would not be good.

Thanks, I checked it out in our reptile medicine book and it's definitely not something I would want to do alone without experience.

He wasn't on an easily removable perch when I got home, but did very well getting onto another stick so I could take him out without having to get my hand too close to him, which he doesn't like when he's in his cage. He ate super worms today and most of them were gut loaded on kale. The kale itself was out of the bowl so he either tested it or accidentally caught it when aiming for a super worm, but it doesn't look like he ate any of it. He had two separate bowel movements and urates still have yellow in them. The gallon jug dripper was still going well when I got home. I don't know if he actually drank anything from it. It seems like maybe he's getting a little more plump in his tail?

Definitely already put weight on his tail, which is great. Still definitely a while to go, but he's still chugging along which means he's a fighter. His colors are looking better too. Yeah those urates will take a while to settle out from the l9oks of them, lots of yellow and looks of slight crystals in them which means he's been really dehydrated for a while. Worries me. I always took care of chams at the petco I worked at in the back room, made sure they got misted a minimum of two times during my shift.

Yeah, I am not sure how often they were misting him at Petsmart, I just know he's been sitting in the back room for at least 2 months. Thanks for your constant evaluations of him, it really helps me. I'm going to either order or start building his cage today. Should I do 2 showers per day on the days I have time (my days off work)?

I don't think so... it would stress him out too much in my opinion. Just work on getting him used to the misting, my want to mess with the temps of the misting waters you use and maybe even the size of the droplets. Some chams like fine mist and some like slightly larger droplets. Always the individuals ^^

He didn't move away from misting this morning. Ate all his super worms again. Last night he stayed on his vine in the shower. Tonight he stayed on his vine and also opened his mouth a few times to catch water. It also looked like he drank some water off of the tile. He also did very well getting on the stick for me. Looks like he is feeling good for sure, look at those colors <3 His urates are getting to be a nicer color, but still have a lot to shoot for, every day is something to be celebrated!

Building stuff is hard. I probably should have just bought the cage that was on sale, lol. I thought I was going to use different dimensions but ended up going with 2 x 2 x 4 anyway to save time and use some of the materials as the size they came in. Not finished yet, but getting there.

I got this misting system and have it set up to fun for 5 minutes every 6 hours. It doesn't let me get very specific, but I figured for now it's better than nothing. It has only run a couple of times and is already flooding the cage. Is this normal? Is 5 minutes too long? I stopped doing the showers once the mister was put in the cage.

When you have the screen cage you can make drainage its not a good thing for it to flood the cage no, but it will happen with solid bottoms with any mister. What mister is that?
