I'd suggest an OTC antihistamine. If it helps following handling, try taking it before handling (however long it's supposed to take effect)—it may reduce the reaction at least.
Another option—especially if it gets more serious—is wearing gloves. If animal handling gloves are too heavy, perhaps evening gloves.
