Anyone ever AI their chams?

well, either way it's still not really a feasible option. I only transferred some sperm from an excited young male. when someone figures out how to consistently extract sperm from males, then we're opening the floodgates to all of these issues. I expect it might be a little less exciting than collecting from a stallion!:)

however, there are plenty of times when I can collect "dripped" sperm. this is something I will likely try again. and freezing appropriately and seeing if they revive, for that matter.

that is what I was also wondering, - the collecting , and freezing , shipping - and then to break it down for AI - even Stallions sometimes do not give you a lot to work with when you are going to a few mares - but the up side, you will not need protective gear or chain lead shanks to collect ( I hope :p ) anyway, an interesting subject non the less

I don't think the guy in the write-up had success storing the sperm- had to be fresh.

His method for collection if I remember right was to get the male excited with a single receptive female, and then before the deed was done, remove the female and finish the male off by hand. And mention was made about how surprisingly easy this was to do. The fresh sample was then sucked into a pipette (manually- mention was made of unfortunate mistakes leaving a bad taste in his mouth and my imagination LOL) and could then be used on several females.

What you need to do is go back and find some of these threads that pop up ever couple of months about chameleons that use their owner's hand as the object of their love affection. Then hire these people! :D

So it looks that collecting a sample of sperm wouldn't be the hard part but storing it could be a challenge.

Not a day goes by that

1. I don't learn something on this forum
2. I see chameleon porn
3. I wonder what the NSA thinks of my chameleon porn :D

Exactly again what I thought right off the back w/ the exception of the NSA stuff. Dr. O once again taught me some pretty big new technical terms dealing w/ chameleons. :D I've seen in the past a turtle's thingy, but they have nothing on a chameleon's package. Quite impressive. I'll keep my fingers crossed for your success.

lol! thanks, i love learning and teaching!!

before i posted this i did search the forums for any other AI threads, but couldn’t find any. if anyone knows of any other info, please pass it along!

this is a photo from a necropsy of the hemipenes in their natural state. if you look carefully, you can make out the groove in the top (dorsal) surface which is where the semen flows. of course when it’s engorged everything looks completely different, but it’s still the same "water slide" for those lil’ spermicles.

Swim little guys, swim!!!!!! I have so many "improper" and "immature" things I want to say, but I'm going to do the right thing, shut up, and just learn. I don't want to go to the principles office tonight. I'm forever 12 years old in a grown man's body.

Thanks, I've been having that same thought, and I'm a 33 year old woman. Pretty interesting process, though! :D

almost 60 days to the day she laid these 24 eggs. of course i didn't try to breed her again to see if the AI took, and she certainly took the attitude of a gravid female. if i showed her a male in the meantime she would go black, hissy and pissy.

the eggs looked so-so, some a bit smaller, some normal. no obvious tiny lil' slugs, though. hopefully i'll know within a few weeks if they're good or not; i would hate to have 9 months go by and then find out they're bad.

I haven't read past the first page, but (considering this works) how easy would it be to ship sperm? Would you have to freeze it and pack with dry ice? Or how long will it be viable if it is sealed in a container?

you should read past the first page. ;)

I wish you were further up the Florida coast. I live in southeast alabama and I would love to meet you. And I also don't trust our herp vet around here ;)

so the entire batch is infertile....all eggs have mildewed. it remains unknown whether the AI attempt didn't take, or if it was an everyday infertile clutch.

if i'm in the situation again where the male "misses" and i can collect the sperm i will certainly try again, and if i have enough volume i can keep some on the side to try various storage/suspension techniques. until someone figures out how to extract sperm in another fashion, that's still the only way i can see how to collect from a live cham. however, i have also considered fresh cadavers. of course i wouldn't sacrifice a a male to get his testes, but if the occasion arose it's a simple matter to remove the testes (which are full of sperm) and try to suspend the sperm indefinitely.

that's an idea that i've been giving some thought to---it would be pretty incredible if a prized breeder was lost but the sperm maintained; with a better AI technique (likely needing an endoscope for correct placement in the distal oviducts) he could keep fathering children long after passing away. the cloaca is very amenable to endoscopy and the anatomy is easy to see; i have already been researching several articles on visualizing the oviduct termination in the urodeum.

Dr. O, I truly believe that had I had a person like you in my life as a high schooler, I would have become a vet. You make everything so understandable, yet you don't dumb things down for us. Thank you so much for trying this experiment, and I'm hoping that you manage to find a way to have a successful AI.

thanks bill!! that's very kind of you to say!

on a related matter, i know my promised website is, oh, about a year overdue (future tip: don't hire your web designers when a) they're on the other side of the country, and b) when their prices reflect the city they are in, not mine!!); however it is coming soon, and i've been writing some starter articles and whatnot. i do have an "Ask the Vet"-type section----i would be happy to receive a mess of questions to begin to work with. anyone can PM me here or email [email protected]. please recognize that i won't be returning any answers personally, they will be used as starter questions on the site.

there are certainly many breeder sites out there and some excellent blogs; i'm going to intertwine the two with a medical spin and hope it does the community some good.

Just for all to know, I'm definitely a member of the "Dr. O Fan Club" for sure. Dr. O has some great bedside manner that we all love and appreciate.
