Anyone Idea what the problem was?

Well, I have to ask what wattage the bulb is that you are using for the basking source?...

I know you said the basking temps are only in the 80's but that looks like a burn to me. Don't get me wrong, you shouldn't be keeping him on substrate like that, but I don't think that chameleon ingested a piece of bark that large.
He would have spit out one of those huge chunks. To me it looks like a huge burn.

There is a guy around here who is an excellent breeder of veileds named Barry Schneider.

If you are thinking of picking up another veiled I highly recommend him.

I was only using a 60 watt basking bulb and I assure you his basking spot was not hot enough to burn him. Whatever that black was on his body was inside and appeared after he died.

Ok 60 watts is pretty low. The shape of that black mark just looked like the pattern that a lightbulb would throw on the side of him.

Anyhow, sorry for your loss.

You should try to make it down to denver for the May 10th reptile show. There will definately be several people selling their own captive bred veileds and more.

Im sure ill make it down for that one even if I already have another veiled by then. I actually got the one who just died from the reptile show at the merchandise mart on jan 26th. Anyone here gonna be at the may show? Would be cool to meet some of you in person.:)

Hey joe, were you at the january show over in the corner with just a small table and some baby panthers that you werent sure you wanted to sell except maybe to the right person?

Oh,someone from lost lake chams is on this forum incase you wanna contact em on this forum.

That was me! I left just after noon...

Im sure you dont remember me but I actually talked to you there for a few minutes. Im 6'5", probably had a backwards hat and was with my wife in case that helps. Anyways, if i make it to the show in may ill swing by and say hi.
