Well, I have to ask what wattage the bulb is that you are using for the basking source?...
I know you said the basking temps are only in the 80's but that looks like a burn to me. Don't get me wrong, you shouldn't be keeping him on substrate like that, but I don't think that chameleon ingested a piece of bark that large.
He would have spit out one of those huge chunks. To me it looks like a huge burn.
