Babies Hatched

Well everybody ... I was pleasantly surprised to find some baby Veileds today. I have 18 eggs in an DIY incubator and 8 in a margarine container with holes. I had checked the eggs last Thur. or Fri. and none had hatched. I figured that I had another month or so to wait as they had been laid on Oct. 3rd.

Today I found that 9 from the incubator had come out of their eggs and were covered in vermiculite. There is one that has broken the egg but is still inside. I don't see it moving so I think perhaps it didn't make it. I'll check again when I get home.

Here's a few pics ...

The enclosure that I have them in is a 10 or 12 gal. tall with a screen top and ventilation holes on the sides. I cleaned it out and put a few paper towels on the bottom. Then I threw in some plastic vines and sprayed heavily a couple times to help them get the vermiculite off of them. None of them had the yolk sac so I'm assuming that they're at least a day old. I also threw a few 1/4" crickets in but didn't see any of them eat ... I couldn't stay to watch too long as I had to go to work.

I haven't set a light up for them yet as I didn't want them to overheat while I was gone there so they are currently getting just ambient room light. I'm assuming a low 25W desk lamp (small bulb) at one end and a UVB 2.0 tube would be fine. Or should I wait a week or two before adding extra lighting?

BTW - My place stays fairly warm ... like 20-25 deg. C. Even with the blinds shut the sun warms up the living room quite well.

Any thoughts or suggestions that you have would be appreciated.

Thanks ... Dyesub Dave. :D

Oh yeah ... I noticed that a couple of the babies already had some nice markings as you can see in the one pic. I know that you can tell the males by the spur but was wondering if the striping indicates anything. Like will those likely be males and / or will they have more vibrant colours when they get older?

Thanks ... Dyesub Dave. :D

congratulations on the hatchlings!:) I don't know about everyone else but I can't see the picture. There is just a space where it is supposed to be. Make sure they get plenty of water, mist them at least 3 times a day. They need the uvb as soon as possible. I am using a reptisum 5.0 an making sure it is the appropriate distance away from them. I also have a 100 watt light bulb that brings the ambient temperature up to 80F (not sure what that is in Celsius, sorry). They may not eat for a day to 3 days. Mine didn't really start eating until the 3rd day. Make sure the crickets are not to big for them. Good luck with them.

Hey Thanks. That's weird that you can't see the pics. I can see them fine ... they're just photobucket image links so there shouldn't be a problem. Anybody else have any problems seeing the pics?

Well I'm getting 250 1/4" or pinhead crickets tonight. I will also be looking for a small UVB light fixture and bulb. I was thinking that UVB 5.0 may be too much for the little buggers buy maybe not. I sprayed them several times before I left. I was trying to help them get the vermiculite off and I wanted to make sure that they had enough moisture while I was at work. Hopefully they will be fine!!

Congratulations! I hope that they all hatch for you!

I have used the Repti-Sun 5.0's on all my veiled hatchlings for years. Use the tube/linear one though (not the spiral/compact).

I keep the hatchlings' temperature in the low 80's. Since I use hoods that take two fluorescent bulbs I use no basking light because I find the cage to be warm enough without it.

Regarding the one that is still in the egg...they almost always appear to be dead when they are laying in the egg absorbing the yolk. It can take more than a day for them to come out of the egg.

The color will not really give you and indication of how vibrantly colored they will be when they are adults....at least it never has in my experience.

Hey Julie,

Well I think that your eggs were laid right around the same time weren't they? However these were the ones in the incubator so I'm not sure if that made a difference or not. I've now put the margarine container that had the other 8 eggs in the incubator as well to see if it will speed up hatching.

I've decided that even if the ones in the margarine container hatch within the next couple of days that the incubator has nothing to do with it as I don't think a few days in the incubator would change anything. However if they take an extra few weeks to hatch then I'll conclude that incubated eggs tend to hatch faster than non-incubated ones.

Good luck with yours Julie and let us know when they hatch!!

BTW - I'm not in a rush to breed my chams again but would like to know a safe time frame to put them together for a little PARTY again! ;) The female laid these eggs around 6.5 months ago. Do you think that by this summer they would be fine or should I wait at least a year after the initial breeding. I don't want to wear the female out and shorten her lifespan.

OK ... thanks for the advice. I just wasn't sure if they were a little more sensitive when newly hatched. I will keep everybody posted on more hatchings and how they make out.

From what I've read, the babies are more sensitive to temperature changes as they do not regulate their body temperatures very well. The low 80s sound like a good temperature, as long as it doesn't go into the 90s or drop too much in temperature at night. Veileds are a bit more hardy when it comes to temperature change though. I'm expecting baby Jacksons soon so I will have to be extra careful. They like it cooler.

Baby Jackson's .... WAAAAAY COOL !!

I saw a pair in a LPS here and they wanted something like $250 - $300 each for them. I'd love to get some but not at those prices!! My apartment rarely goes below 20 deg. C. (68 deg. F.) and is quite often up to around 22-25 deg. C. (72-77 deg. F.). So I'll likely get that small incandescent lamp on one end of the enclosure later today.

Thanks .... Dyesub Dave. :D

Congrats Dave!!! You must be excited! I remember we were going through our first clutches around the same time....but I don't think my chameleons will hatch for a few more months :( But your little guys look sooo cute...keep us updated with pictures!!

Well ... I had somebody pick me up some 1/4" crickets as that's what someone else on the forum said they used with their hatchlings. Unfortunately they were a bit larger than 1/4" .... more like 3/8" and I think the babies were a little scared of them.

So I cleaned out the enclosure and I'm getting some pinheads tonight. I'd like to find some wingless fruit fly cultures around here.

BTW - The one that I thought wasn't going to make it cuz it was stuck in the egg and not moving had hatched when I got home last night. So that's 10 so far with 16 eggs left to go.

WOW ... Are these guys ever cute when first starting to eat! I got some pinhead crickets for them and they are going to town on them. It's funny to see them learning how far their tongues will go. Quite often their tongue will only shoot halfway to where the cricket is so they have to move closer.

Here's a few more pics and a video of the one that hatched last night.

Hey Chamoholics ... as of this morning there are 13 out of the egg. Most seem to be eating fairly well. I'll try to get some more pics tonight or this weekend however for size comparison the newborn in the very first pic in this thread is on the tip of my index finger. I'll try and get a pic of one beside a coin or something.

P.S. Good luck with your Nose Be's Boothy !!!

Hey Boothy ... nice chams. I just noticed that you're in Ontario as well but I'm not exactly sure how far you are from me. If you get some babies from your Nosey Be's I would definitely be interested. The female is gorgeous!!

No worries about the thread. There's plenty -O- room for everybody!! LOL
