Babies Hatched

Well .. the 14th baby cham started hatching this morning. They all seem to be eating well on pinhead crickets. I am going to try to get some wingless fruitflies for variation in their diet.

I have noticed that occasionally some seem to have little naps later in the day. At first I was concerned but then I figured that they're only a few days old they probably need the rest. Most baby animals are napping all the time!! LOL

I'll try to update with some pics this weekend.

OK Boothy .... Keep me posted. ;)

Hey Julie ... the 18th baby starting hatching this morning. So that means that ALL 18 that were in my DIY incubator have hatched. However the 8 eggs that were just in a margarine container with vermiculite and sand and holes poked in the side have not started to hatch at all. Did you have yours in an incubator? I wonder if it's a temp / humidity thing.

Also ... didn't you have a whole BUNCH of eggs? I only had 26 in this batch so perhaps they start off with a little more nourishment since it doesn't have to be split up so many ways?? Just a couple of thoughts as to what may be taking yours a bit longer. I've heard of people having to wait 8-9 months for their veiled eggs to hatch. I'm sure yours will start VERY SOON !! :)

Yep-HUGE clutch-this was Carla's first clutch-there were 78 total, and there are 69 perfect little eggs left! I did not have these in an incubator. Just in a desk at around 77degrees. It certainly could be closer to 8 months, but I am hoping for sooner! We are at 6 months and 12 days!

Well perhaps that's the difference ... the incubator part. Mine started hatching at 6 months 18 days. ( Actually ... perhaps a couple of days earlier since I hadn't checked in a few days.) My DIY incubator was really easy to make. Check it out here .... (post #55)...https://www.chameleonforums.com/veiled-chameleon-not-laying-6156/index2.html

I've been keeping my other 8 eggs in the incubator starting a week after the initial eggs hatched. I figure that my experiment has shown me that the incubated eggs hatch sooner ... at least this time they did. :)

They are so adorible! Jealous!:p

The links for the home made incubator didn't work, could you explain the set up?

Hey Kat .... Just click on the part above that says 'Veiled Chameleon not laying eggs' and it should take you right to that thread .... it just worked for me. Then you have to scroll down to POST #55 ( Number at Upper-Right of each post ) and that's where it explains how I made it.

Let me know if it still doesn't work for you!!

Remaining Babies Hatched !!

Well ... the final 8 eggs that were NOT originally in the incubator started hatching on Saturday and the last one hatched this morning.

That makes 26 healthy babies in all. Here's a few updated pics and vids of the newcomers.

Sorry about the quality of the vids. They were taken with my digital camera and look fine on the camera screen but always seem to get a bit darker on the computer. Hope you can make out what's in them!!

Hey Dave Congrats they look so good,I just want to know what temperature(s) did you incubate them in like what day and night temp what times do you change them.
In faranheit or Celsius is fine but urgently need to know?

Thanks!:)

These last 8 eggs were not in the incubator except for the last few weeks. These eggs were in a margarine container kept at appox. room temperature. However much of the time this container was on top of a smaller reptile cage so may have been a few degrees warmer ... so say daytime from 20-25 deg. C. and nighttime 18-22 deg. C.

The incubated eggs all hatched first and were kept at around 82 deg. F. The incubator pics and description are in this thread ... https://www.chameleonforums.com/veiled-chameleon-not-laying-6156/

Check post #31 for pics and post #55 for description.

OK ... One last video of the LAST baby veiled hatching this morning. I think this one may be a little easier to see!

Actually I've seen a few sites that tell you how to turn an old refrigerator into an incubator. The fridge doesn't have to work as long as the seal is good. They get a little elaborate with theirs though.

I was thinking of looking for a broken mini-fridge and just using a shallow tupperware container with water holding a sumersible aquarium heater. Then you could put the little tupperware containers with eggs on the shelves.

I'll post pics if I get one up and running!!
